?I?ll stop the world, and melt with you?

?Modern English

Learning how to deal with other people is no easy task. Once a person breaks free of solitary confinement, there are three general types of relationships that can develop which characterize how others appear to us, and even more importantly how we comport ourselves with others. All of these possibilities are preferable to the initial state of being alone. This is not to say that this form of loneliness should be reduced to being single in the sense of being unmarried. For instance, there are unfortunately many married people who feel ?alone? at times in the context of their marriage. On the flip side, each us may maintain a multitude of meaningful relationships that are ?sacred bonds? throughout our entire lives. Nonetheless, the bottom line model of marriage remains just as relevant. In light of this, our real purpose is to demonstrate how all our states of being (including being alone) have to be uplifted and sweetened by added new layers of understanding.

As our analysis progresses we shall endeavor to show how there are four ?postures? vis-?-vis relationships that are reiterated in several ways: 1) between ourselves and others in the interpersonal realm (marriage being the operative model in the simple sense) 2) between me and myself in the intrapersonal realm (where marriage becomes the operative metaphor for inner integration with ?oneself as another?: ?I am peaceful co-existing with myself with minimal internal conflict?) and finally 3) it will shape our relationship with the Divine (another figurative ?marriage? that represents mystical ?unions? and transcendental states of consciousness).

Beginning with the interpersonal, our encounter with the other (especially our ?significant? other) must prioritize the type of relationship according to the order of solutions to the loneliness problem that appears in the verse from Genesis 2:18 ??I will make for him a helper opposite him.? In Hebrew ?for him? or ?lo [??]? implies that my marriage partner was created just for me. In contrast to the ?one size fits all? industrial model of consumerism, this relationship was ?manufactured? by Divine intervention using cosmic scale forces for a market of one. Looking for a mate? Accept no substitutes! There is only one for me. This is a custom job, a personalized non-transferrable relationship that will only work for me and me alone.

If we are playing the Adam part, then we should regard our spouse as ?the one and only,? that person of whom we say ?we were made for each other.? While we will address the masculine formulation of ?lo? (why to him and not to her?) later on in our series, for now, assuming we trade places with our partners in reading ourselves into the various roles, we can assume that ?I am for this person? and ?this other person is for me? with the deepest conviction of belonging together. ?Lo? can also mean ?to him? implying that I need to go out of myself towards the other or that, facing the other, I am pulled out of myself. The ?to/for? combination in the word ?lo? (to/for him) establishes a relationship based on selfless dedication. I am not concerned with myself and my self interests. All I care about is you. My ?I? is fulfilled in ?you.?

Melting and fusion are common terms for either the dissolution of one?s independent self or (more positively) the transcendence of the self which occurs by virtue of the other. ?You make me into more than I could ever be on my own.? ?I?ve become a better person because of you.? There are many fine points of selfless dedication. Moreover, this will have to be differentiated from its negative twin?the subjugation of the self or the total negation of self in the other.

Melting can turn lead into gold or it can end a relationship if there is nothing left of me to give over to the other. Burnt up I may end up burning out. Perhaps the critical difference lies in the distinction that the philosopher Emmanuel Levinas makes between ?totality? and ?infinity.? My ?total? love risks either my own self-destruction of the dissolution of the relationship. Because I was totally for you, I realized that I was not there anymore. By contrast, having an infinite love always has infinite reserve that can give endlessly without expending all that I have at any one time. This form of selfless dedication might be likened to the famous Burning Bush whose fire did not consume its substance. The passion and intensity of the relationship is self-refueling?that is, it produces as much energy as it consumes so that the ?interaction? can be maintained forever. It is stable fusion.

My participation in the world carries with it ?other others.? When one?s significant other becomes one?s entire world the whole world falls by the wayside, concentrating all of its significance on my significant other as far as I am concerned. So too, when ?I? myself am swallowed into the singularity of the relationship, then, as the popular song goes ?I?ll stop the world, and melt with you.?

Skipping over for now the two lesser relationships where I am relating out of self interest (where I?ll support you if you support me), and conflict based realities (where we exist to oppose each other in a world fraught with friction), we can briefly peek in on the inflection of these relationships as they are inscribed intrapersonally.

In the intrapersonal, the absence of a relationship can certainly be experienced amidst a relationship (the relationship of non-relationship) and we might even think that this ?time to myself? will afford me the space ?away from it all? whereby I can get in touch with myself. Me finding myself converts the ?sterility? of alone time into something productive in that I enter into a relationship with myself, I keep myself company, I learn about who I am from listening to my silent voice. Within such a situation we can detect an echo of the encounter with the other that is predicated on selfless dedication. I feel naturally at home with myself without becoming self-conscious and letting my ego force it?s alternative agenda on me. Me given over for or to myself is registered as peaceful ?flow? and psychic harmony.

However, if I am disconnected from my own inner being, estranged from my own soul, lost in an inauthentic shell of a pretend self, then I am internally isolated?the symptom of which is that I am most uncomfortable in my own skin. I don?t recognize the person staring back at me in the mirror. All self-reflection such as this always entails a doubling: the subject as knower and the subject as the object of inquiry. Introspection makes sense of the odd impulse of needing to ?find oneself.? If I turn myself into an other, then the person I that meet (who is me) may be a source of internal unity (corresponding to the selfless dedication of being to or for an other in the interpersonal realm) or mutually beneficial support (as in the second relationship configuration?in this case I find myself ?negotiating? with myself so that I will back myself up?I ?second? my own motion in the congressional sessions in my mind) or I am filled with conflict and turn into my own worst enemy. The last type of relationship helps explain how our ?internal affairs? can get out of order, how I can betray my own best self-interests or undermine myself.

?

In Part Three we will examine our external and internal ?support systems? and the contracts that establish them more closely.

Democrats Make Moves To Ensure Cabinet, Congressional Committee Chairs Are Diverse

Salon:

Political expediency can make a sudden feminist out of anyone, apparently. There was former Romney advisor Dan Senor on Twitter last week, expressing his distaste for potential Defense Secretary nominee Chuck Hagel: ?Isn?t it strange that the President dropped Rice but is dug in over #Hagel? Especially when he can nominate the highly qualified #Flournoy??

Christmas Day storms blamed for 3 deaths

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) -- Twisters hopscotched across the Deep South, and, along with brutal, straight-line winds, knocked down countless trees, blew the roofs off homes and left many Christmas celebrations in the dark. Holiday travelers in the nation's much colder midsection battled treacherous driving conditions from freezing rain and blizzard conditions from the same fast-moving storms.

As predicted, conditions were volatile throughout the day and into the night with tornado warnings still out for some parts of Alabama, Florida and Georgia. The storms were blamed for three deaths, several injuries, and left homes from Louisiana to Alabama damaged.

In Mobile, Ala., a tornado or high winds damaged homes, a high school and church, and knocked down power lines and large tree limbs in an area just west of downtown around nightfall. WALA-TV's tower camera captured the image of a large funnel cloud headed toward downtown.

Rick Cauley, his wife, Ashley, and two children were hosting members of both of their families. When the sirens went off, the family headed down the block to take shelter at the athletic field house at Mobile's Murphy High School.

"As luck would have it, that's where the tornado hit," Cauley said. "The pressure dropped and the ears started popping and it got crazy for a second." They were all fine, though the school was damaged. Hours after the storm hit, officials reported no serious injuries in the southwestern Alabama city.

The storm system with heavy rains moved into Georgia early Wednesday and expected to hit the Carolinas with severe weather as well.

Meanwhile, blizzard conditions hit the nation's midsection.

Earlier in the day, winds toppled a tree onto a pickup truck in the Houston area, killing the driver, and a 53-year-old north Louisiana man was killed when a tree fell on his house. Icy roads already were blamed for a 21-vehicle pileup in Oklahoma, and the Highway Patrol there says a 28-year-old woman was killed in a crash on a snowy U.S. Highway near Fairview.

The snowstorm that caused numerous accidents pushed out of Oklahoma late Tuesday, carrying with it blizzard warnings for parts of northeast Arkansas, where 10 inches of snow was forecast. Freezing rain clung to trees and utility lines in Arkansas and winds gusts up to 30 mph whipped them around, causing about 71,000 customers to lose electricity for a time.

Blizzard conditions were possible for parts of Illinois, Indiana and western Kentucky with predictions of 4 to 7 inches of snow.

A tornado struck a mobile home park near the municipal airport at Troy, Ala., trapping a man in the wreckage of a trailer, said Thomas Johnston of the Pike County Emergency Management Agency. Rescue workers freed the person, who wasn't hurt badly, and no other serious injuries were reported, he said.

An apparent tornado also caused damage in Grove Hill, about 80 miles north of Mobile.

Mary Cartright said she was working at the Fast Track convenience store in the town on Christmas evening when the wind started howling and the lights flickered, knocking out the store's computerized cash registers.

"Our cash registers are down so our doors are closed," said Cartright in a phone interview.

Trees fell on a few houses in central Louisiana's Rapides Parish, but there were no injuries reported, said sheriff's Lt. Tommy Carnline. Near McNeill, Miss., a likely tornado damaged a dozen homes and sent eight people to the hospital, none with life-threatening injuries, said Pearl River County emergency management agency director Danny Manley.

Gov. Phil Bryant declared a state of emergency in the state, saying eight counties have reported damages and some injuries.

Fog blanketed highways, including arteries in the Atlanta area, which was expected to be dealing with the same storm system on Wednesday. In New Mexico, drivers across the eastern plains had to fight through snow, ice and low visibility.

At least three tornadoes were reported in Texas, though only one building was damaged, according to the National Weather Service.

More than 500 flights nationwide were canceled by the evening, according to the flight tracker FlightAware.com. More than half were canceled into and out of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport that got a few inches of snow.

Christmas lights also were knocked out with more than 100,000 customers without power for at least a time in Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama.

In Louisiana, quarter-sized hail was reported early Tuesday in the western part of the state and a WDSU viewer sent a photo to the TV station of what appeared to be a waterspout around the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in New Orleans. There were no reports of crashes or damage.

Some mountainous areas of Arkansas' Ozark Mountains could get up to 10 inches of snow, which would make travel "very hazardous or impossible" in the northern tier of the state from near whiteout conditions, the weather service said.

The holiday may conjure visions of snow and ice, but twisters this time of year are not unheard of. Ten storm systems in the last 50 years have spawned at least one Christmastime tornado with winds of 113 mph or more in the South, said Chris Vaccaro, a National Weather Service spokesman in Washington, via email.

The most lethal were the storms of Dec. 24-26, 1982, when 29 tornadoes in Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee and Mississippi killed three people and injured 32.

In Mobile, a large section of the roof on the Trinity Episcopal Church is missing and the front wall of the parish wall is gone, said Scott Rye, a senior warden at the church in the Midtown section of the city.

On Christmas Eve, the church with about 500 members was crowded for services.

"Thank God this didn't happen last night," Rye said.

The church finished a $1 million-plus renovation campaign in June 2011, which required the closure of the historic sanctuary for more than a year.

Relationships Initiate?Self-Improvement

Posted by Dr. Diva Verdun on December 21, 2012 ? Leave a Comment?

Looking at the way our relationships are structured we learn to use them as mirror reflections to find the things within ourselves that we need to focus our attention on.? As long as we are looking at the person that holds our affections with a critical eye, we are not focused on the reality that the reflection we see in the mirror is actually pointing at the issues we need to address within.

No matter how much we try to change someone else we cannot.? People only change when they find a reason to make improvements within and not before. By chastising and criticizing your beloved, you are actually driving a wedge into the relationship bond.? You are breaking down the bridge from which love freely flows.? Where you see they need to make self-improvement is also a marker that is pointing directly back to you, so that you can find the very same similarities within yourself.

Relationships are a slippery slope.? You can get so caught up in attempting to improve someone else?s behavior and character, that you are not even aware of your own.? A relationship can only level off to the height of your awareness of self.? Thus, if you are not aware of the internal struggles you are experiencing, you will continue to attract others into your experience that bring trials and challenges that are designed to point you in the direction of your own healing.

The miraculous thing about bonding relationships is the growth that both parties receive in the experience. When both people are working to improve themselves, the need to criticize and chastise each other falls away and becomes true deep loving support of each others individual and spiritual growth.

To often we want to control and force the other person into their healing to satisfy our own needs and fears.? The amazing thing about relationships is that the other person is limited in their growth and healing unless we are growing and healing as well.? Thus, no amount of force, pressure or control can move them one step forward in their own growth and healing.

If there is no growth and healing on an individual level, your relationship will become stagnant and dry-up resulting in either a break-up, because one person is growing and the other is not, or level off into a complacent and withered experience void of love and passion as the you both continue to simply co-exist in your pain.

Relationships Initiate Self-Improvement - Dr. Diva VerdunWhat you desire in a relationship is yours to have.? The person you attract to you is always right in the moment that they come into your experience.? They mirror exactly all you are at that particular moment, both the good and the bad.? Sadly, most people are not adept in many cases to be aware of this truth and don?t realize that the relationship is also mirroring your bad qualities as well, when you see them in your beloved.

Seeing yourself in the mirror of your relationship can be a beautiful experience when you see love, compassion, passion, trust, and all the other wonderful things that come with the union you are enjoying.? Sadly, you do not readily welcome seeing the bad.? However, when you begin to exercise self-mastery, you become aware that all things that happen for your bad, both big and small, in relationships and otherwise, are all designed for your good.? You become fully aware that your good manifest through you and you become disciplined to use every opportunity to work on your own issues, knowing that as you do everything else will level-off to your new state of awareness, including seeing growth and changes in your beloved and the relationship.

Relationships are not simply about love and passion and all the wonderful things that come with them.? They are key elements in your own growth in the equation of higher levels of awareness and spirituality. When you begin to exercise self-mastery to go deeper to carve out your own negative thinking and deal with your own pain, your behavior and character patterns change, which directly improve your relationship by either ending one that does not serve you, improving the one you have, as both people grow in Divine Love as Spirit makes the adjustments, or you begin to attract new people into your experience with fresh new mirrors.

Namaste!

Obama on gun violence: 'We hear you.'

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama says his administration has received an outpouring of support for stricter gun laws following last week's elementary school massacre in Connecticut, telling respondents to an online petition, "We hear you."

The president said in a video released Friday that he has been encouraged that many gun owners have said there are steps the nation can take to prevent more deadly shootings, "steps that both protect our rights and protect our kids."

"I will do everything in my power as president to advance these efforts because if there's even one thing we can do as a country to protect our children, we have a responsibility to try," Obama said.

Obama was holding a moment of silence on Friday morning at the White House marking one week since the shooting that killed 20 children and six adults at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school. The National Rifle Association, the country's foremost gun lobby, was holding a news conference on Friday in the aftermath of the shootings.

The president has challenged the NRA to "do some self-reflection" and join a broad effort to reduce gun violence. The organization said Tuesday it would offer "meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again."

In Friday's video, the president responded to a "We the People" petition on the White House website that allows the public to submit petitions. Nearly 200,000 people have urged Obama to address gun control in one petition and petitions related to gun violence have amassed more than 400,000 signatures.

Obama has begun laying the groundwork for a push to tighten gun laws, address mental health needs and reexamine the glamorization of guns and violence.

Vice President Joe Biden is leading a working group of administration officials and outside advisers to offer recommendations by January. Biden's group is considering reinstating a ban on military-style assault weapons, which expired in 2004, closing loopholes that allow gun buyers to avoid background checks and restricting high-capacity magazines.

Gun-control measures have faced strong opposition in Congress for the past decade but Obama has suggested he intends to make it a key part of his agenda next year. In the video, he urged the public to become involved in

"If we're going to succeed, it's going to take a sustained effort of mothers and fathers, daughters and sons, law enforcement and responsible gun owners, organizing, speaking up, calling their members of Congress as many times as it takes, standing up and saying 'enough' on behalf of all our kids," Obama said.

Selecting A Competent School For Your Child's Well - Article Submitter

Selecting a school is one of the biggest decisions any parent can make for their young child. Like any other crucial stage of development, entering school will expose a child to a wide range of experiences and opportunities for learning information and acquiring new skills that they will use for the rest of their lives. Because different educational institutions make use of different approaches to teaching children, making the right choice in terms of schools contributes a lot towards influencing the direction that a young mind's development will take.

Many schools make it part of their teaching strategy to instruct students on certain ways of accomplishing tasks, processing information, and practicing their mental and physical capabilities. There are instances, however, when such a method of instruction can actually prevent a child from fully maximizing their potential for growth and learning. For parents seeking a different school experience for their children, a competent school may just be the solution they need.

Specialized education is characterized by its respect for a child's natural psychological development and its emphasis on facilitating learning processes in an environment that fosters independence and learning through experience. Children, the founder believes, are profoundly intelligent and have a natural ability to teach themselves; thus, by putting them in loving and encouraging environment, their growing minds can be effectively nurtured.

Specialized education encourages children to interact with a prepared environment and direct their own learning. This is done by inviting them to engage in hands-on activities of their choice rather than simply sitting down and receiving learning materials and direct instruction from their educators. Children taught in this specialized manner are found to develop concentration, discipline, and a love of life-long learning.

This approach does not simply cater to children of school age. Expectant mothers and their spouses can attend the antenatal classes competent schools offer to begin learning about the first few months of life of the precious baby that they will soon meet. These classes provide useful discussions and sessions for making toys such as mobiles and grasping tools that would help the baby's mind and body learn new things.

By providing specially developed learning activities for young children and comprehensive learning opportunities for parents in baby groups, specialized educational institutions help provide natural and coherent approaches to education for parents and children alike. By allowing children the freedom to explore the world, make their own choices, and get first-hand experiences through specially prepared classroom environments, they gain the ability to develop into well-rounded individuals-and eventually, intelligent, mature, and perceptive adults.

Learn the things you need to learn before your baby comes through antenatal classes Brighton and become the best parent you can be.

Supreme Court on DOMA: Are they really going to rule? - ChicagoNow

By Nick Augustine, today at 1:16 am

It was recently reported that we are going to hear results this Friday regarding Prop 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act appeals filed with the Supremes (that?s what many lawyers call the Supreme Court ? it?s somewhat comical because I always think of the singing group when people say that).

Every time I check the U.S. Supreme Court docket I see the same entry: ?DISTRIBUTED for Conference of [insert date] (now indicating) December 7, 2012. Apparently but unconfirmed by yours truly, the Supremes apparently agreed last Friday to consider Prop 8 and gay marriage. For more on the Defense of Marriage Act, the one defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

For more on the Act (better known as DOMA) see DOMA: Supreme Court has yet to hear cases on the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act

There are many lawyers writing on the issue of gay marriage rights. I want to know why our U.S. Supreme Court?s docket indicated the following (same post for the several cases):

?Oct 29 2012 DISTRIBUTED for Conference of November 20, 2012.
Nov 13 2012 DISTRIBUTED for Conference of November 30, 2012.
Dec 3 2012 DISTRIBUTED for Conference of December 7, 2012.?

The outcome of the Supreme Court's ruling on these cases will affect many people, regardless of their sexual orientation or marital status. The DOMA decision will affect family law attorneys, health care providers, and administrators in several additional service professions.

Hopefully there will be a decision on Prop 8 and the DOMA cases soon, possibly later this week.

PFT: Dead Cowboy's mother forgives teammate

David DeCastroAP

The Steelers might finally get a return on their first round pick.

According to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday that rookie David DeCastro could play right guard this week against the Cowboys. That would allow them to switch Ramon Foster to left guard and Maurkice Pouncey back to center.

?We believe that his health is at level where, if we like what we see, he might have the opportunity to play,? Tomlin said of DeCastro, who has played only on field-goal and extra-point units the last two games. DeCastro would have likely started all year, but for a preseason knee injury.

The Steelers have been shuffling the line all season, and the aggravation of Willie Colon?s knee injury caused the latest round. Colon had surgery Monday and will miss at least two games, and probably the rest of the season. Tomlin said he wanted to see how Colon responded to surgery before he made a determination on a roster move.

Of course, that?s not their only injury problem.

Tomlin said cornerback Cortez Allen has a hip flexor injury that Tomlin which could keep him out of the Cowboys game. Allen has replaced Ike Taylor, who has been out with a hairline fracture in his right ankle.

Outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley, however, is expected to return after missing the last two games.

Patriots still bosses of?AFC

December 10, 2012, 11:27 pm

Every time the Patriots win a game at Gillette Stadium, a recording of The Who singing, "Meet the new boss / Same as the old boss" echoes across the field as soon as the final gun sounds.

Never was it more apt than on Monday night.

The Texans arrived in Foxboro eager to live up to their NFL-best 11-1 record, and anxious to prove -- to themselves, to a national television audience, and especially to the Patriots -- that it's time for a changing of the guard atop the AFC, a conference the Pats have dominated for more than a decade. Indeed, wide receiver Andre Johnson proclaimed last week that this would be "the biggest game in franchise history".

Instead, the old bosses . . .

bullet.gif Scored the first three times they touched the ball,

bullet.gif Put together their best defensive effort of the year, keeping the Texans off the scoreboard until midway through the third quarter, and

bullet.gif Held Houston to a combined 4-for-16 on third- and fourth-down opportunities, all of which helped them . . .

bullet.gif? Coast to a 42-14 victory that -- to swipe a thought from a Yankee fan about the 1978 A.L. East race -- looked like the first time a second-place team ever eliminated a first-place team from the AFC postseason hunt.

"It's a very convincing win against a good football team," said Wes Welker. "And we're excited about it."

Especially since -- for all their one-game-at-a-time talk during the week -- the Patriots came into this one as fired up as the Texans.

"We came into this game with a chip on our shoulder," said linebacker Jerod Mayo. "Everyone came into this game talking about the Houston Texans . . . We always talk about ignoring the noise, but [we] heard it. [We] heard about it walking down the street. It was a little bit of a motivational factor, for me at least, and I'm sure [for] the other guys . . . as well."

The Texans still hold the No. 1 seed in the playoff standings; they're 11-2 and the Patriots are 10-3. (New England holds the tie-breaker edge on Denver, which is also 10-3, for the No. 2 spot by virtue of its October victory over the Broncos.) If the Pats run the table, however, they'll take over the top seed -- and earn home-field advantage throughout the playoffs -- should Houston lose one of its remaining three games.

But even if they stay at No. 2, the Patriots made a statement Monday night.

"They feel good about the way they played tonight, and they should," said coach Bill Belichick. "They did a good job."

It started early.

After Arian Foster gained 15 yards on the Texans' first official play from scrimmage (a penalty wiped out a 12-yard run by Foster on the first actual play), the Pats' defense stiffened and forced a punt. A 31-yard return by Welker put the ball on the New England 44, and Tom Brady had them in the end zone seven plays later, capping the drive with a seven-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Hernandez.

Houston's only real chance to make a game of it came on the next drive, as the Texans moved from their 20 to the Pats' 21. But Matt Schaub missed a wide-open Foster in the flat and instead tried to hit Kevin Walter down the seam in the end zone. Devin McCourty intercepted the pass and returned it to the 18; Brady then engineered a 6-play, 82-yard drive that ended with a 37-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Lloyd and a 14-0 lead.

"That was a big play by Devin," said Belichick.

The New England defense forced another punt on Houston's next possession, and that set the stage for an 8-play, 70-yard march, with Brady firing his second TD pass of the night to Hernandez -- this one of four yards -- to make it 21-0.

New England wouldn't score on its next four possessions, but the defense kept the Texans pointless, as well. The horse officially left the barn when Brady and the newly returned Donte Stallworth hooked up on a 63-yard touchdown pass with 9:49 remaining in the third quarter for a 28-0 lead.

From there, the teams traded touchdowns -- a one-yard run by Foster to break the shutout; a Lloyd recovery of a Danny Woodhead fumble in the end zone; a 14-yard run by Stevan Ridley, and a one-yard run by Houston backup quarterback T.J. Yates -- for the 42-14 final.

"I finally feel like we put together four quarters of football," said Mayo.

It was a schooling for the young Texans, and at least one of them -- defensive end Antonio Smith -- says he learned his lesson.

"Now we know what we're dealing with," he said.

What they're dealing with, on this night at least, was the new boss. Same as the old boss.

Re: SUGGESTIONS FOR ENHANCING FTM 2012 WEB LINKS ...

I do have more to come. Just might take a day to come back around to it.

PS. I just re-read what I wrote last night. The second posting was strongly worded on some points, and I just wanted to say that language was not directed at you, KathyMarieAnn, or anyone else for that matter. I'm sometimes overly emphatic when preaching from my soapbox. ;)

Gorillas with an extravert personality live longer than their more introverted peers, a study suggests

An international team of researchers looked at the role of personality by studying 298 gorillas in North American zoos and sanctuaries for over 18 years.

The gorillas' personalities were assessed by keepers, volunteers, researchers and caretakers who knew the gorillas well. Their personality was scored with measures adapted from techniques for studying people and other primates.

Researchers found that out of four personality traits dominance, extraversion, neuroticism and agreeableness extraversion, which was associated with behaviours such as sociability, activity, play and curiosity, was linked with longer survival.

The study found that the link between extraversion and survival was not affected by age or gender, rearing condition or how many times the gorilla had moved location.

Researchers say these findings are consistent with studies in people which found that extraverts tend to live longer.

The study, carried out on western lowland gorillas is important in understanding how the relationship between personality and longevity of life evolved.

Dr Alex Weiss, of the University of Edinburgh's School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences, said: "These findings highlight how understanding the natural history of personality is vital to insuring the continued health and well-being of humans, gorillas and other great apes."

###

The study is published today in the Royal Society journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences. The collection of personality data in 1994 was funded by Zoo Atlanta, the Georgia Institute of Technology, and a Lincoln Park Zoological Society's Dr Scholl's Graduate Research Fellowship.

Illinois state Senate approves drivers licenses for illegal immigrants

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois (Reuters) - The Illinois state Senate voted on Tuesday to allow illegal immigrants to obtain temporary drivers licenses, and sent to the House the measure that would make Illinois the most populous U.S. state to allow such licenses.

Only Washington state and New Mexico allow drivers licenses for illegal immigrants, while Utah allows driving permits.

Republican leaders in the Illinois state legislature earlier on Tuesday announced their support for the proposal, after Hispanics voted overwhelmingly for Democrats in the November election.

Illinois has some 2 million Hispanics, according to the 2010 Census, and lawmakers said there are an estimated 250,000 illegal immigrants in the state.

The proposal passed the Senate by a vote of 41 to 14. It now must go to the House for approval, and must be signed into law by Democratic Governor Pat Quinn, who has not yet stated his position.

Shopper alert! Will labor strike at L.A. ports mean bare shelves?

The holiday inventory is already in place, but goods for the post-Christmas sales are bottled up off the coast of Los Angeles, as container ships from Asia go unattended due to a six-day labor strike.

By Daniel B. Wood,?Staff writer / December 3, 2012

Anchored container ships sit offshore near the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach during a strike by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 63 Office Clerical Unit in Los Angeles, California, December 2.

The labor strike at the ports in Los Angeles and Long Beach, Calif., the two biggest ports in the US, probably won't keep toys and TVs off the shelves for the holiday season, but it is likely to affect white sales and other annual post-Christmas mega-bargains if it is not resolved soon.

Besides hitting retailers, many analysts say, the six-day-old strike is beginning to disrupt the just-in-time supply chains of US manufacturers, as container ships that should offload in L.A. are stuck in the ports or moored offshore with no one to unpack goods ultimately destined to travel by truck or rail to inland factories and plants.

Because of the strike's potential to damage the economy, calls are becoming more urgent for a resolution of the labor dispute between the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (Local 63 Office Clerical) and some of the world?s biggest shipping lines and terminal operators, who have operations at the two ports.?The ports account for at least 40 percent of total imported containerized cargo for the United States.

?This cannot continue," Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said Monday in a stiff missive to both sides. "With thousands of members of other ILWU locals now honoring the picket lines,? the strike is ?costing our local economy billions of dollars,? he wrote to the union.??The cost is too great to continue down this failed path,? said Mr. Villaraigosa, who is asking for 'round-the-clock mediation.

Experience shows that the effects of such a strike can be long-lasting. It took retailers about six months to recover from a 10-day lockout of longshoremen at several West Coast ports in 2002, Jonathan Gold, vice president of supply chain and customs policy for the National Retail Foundation, told The Sun newspaper in San Bernardino, Calif.

"This shutdown of the ports doesn't just impact the retail industry," Mr. Gold is quoted as saying. "You've got manufacturers who are operating just-in-time supply chains, and you've got exports that aren't moving because the ports are shut down. We need it to end now because it's going to take some time to clear through the backups."

Ten of 14 cargo-container terminals at the two ports are shut down. (Los Angeles is No. 1 in container traffic and Long Beach is ranked second, according to industry data.) As of Monday, nine ships are in dock unattended, 11 more are moored offshore, and at least three have been diverted to other ports. Others inbound from Asia are biding their time.

Sunland Peanut Butter Plant Shuttered By FDA, In First-Ever Use Of New Powers, After Huge Recall

WASHINGTON ? The Food and Drug Administration halted operations of the country's largest organic peanut butter processor Monday, cracking down on salmonella poisoning for the first time with new enforcement authority the agency gained in a 2011 food safety law.

FDA officials found salmonella all over Sunland Inc.'s New Mexico processing plant after 41 people in 20 states, most of them children, were sickened by peanut butter manufactured at the plant in Portales and sold by Trader Joe's grocery chain. The FDA suspended Sunland's registration Monday, preventing the company from producing or distributing any food.

The food safety law gave the FDA authority to suspend a company's registration when food manufactured or held there has a "reasonable probability" of causing serious health problems or death. Before the food safety law was enacted early last year, the FDA would have had to go to court to suspend a company's registration.

Michael Taylor, the FDA's deputy commissioner for foods, said the agency's ability to suspend a registration like this one is a major step forward for the agency.

"Consumers can be assured that products will not leave this facility until we determine they have implemented preventive measures that are effective to produce safe products," Taylor said.

Sunland had voluntarily closed its plant after a September outbreak and planned to reopen its peanut processing facility on Tuesday, with hopes of selling peanut butter again by the end of the year. Sunland's Katalin Coburn said FDA's decision to suspend the registration was a surprise to the company and Sunland officials had assumed they were allowed to resume operations.

The company now has the right to a hearing and must prove to the agency that its facilities are clean enough to reopen. Coburn said Sunland is cooperating with FDA and company officials hope they can be up and running again soon.

Sunland is the nation's largest organic peanut butter processor, though it also produces many non-organic products. The company recalled hundreds of organic and non-organic nut butters and nuts manufactured since 2010 after Trader Joe's Valencia Creamy Peanut Butter was linked to the salmonella illnesses in September.

In addition to Trader Joe's, Sunland sold hundreds of different peanut products to Whole Foods, Safeway, Target and other large grocery chains.

During a month-long investigation, after the outbreak linked to processor Sunland and to Trader Joe's, FDA inspectors found samples of salmonella in 28 different locations in the plant, in 13 nut butter samples and in one sample of raw peanuts.

The agency also found improper handling of the products, unclean equipment and uncovered trailers of peanuts outside the facility that were exposed to rain and birds.

The FDA said that over the past three years, the company shipped products even though portions of their lots, or daily production runs, tested positive for salmonella in internal tests. The agency also found that the internal tests failed to find salmonella when it was present.

FDA inspectors found many of the same problems ? including employees putting their bare fingers in empty jars before they were filled, open bags of ingredients, unclean equipment, and many other violations ? in a 2007 inspection. Similar problems were recorded by inspectors in 2009, 2010 and 2011, though government officials didn't take any action or release the results of those inspections until after the illnesses were discovered this year.

In a statement issued earlier this month, Sunland's president and chief executive officer, Jimmie Shearer, denied the company knowingly shipped tainted products.

"At no time in its 24-year history has Sunland, Inc. released for distribution any products that it knew to be potentially contaminated with harmful microorganisms," Shearer said in a statement posted on the company's website. "In every instance where test results indicated the presence of a contaminant, the implicated product was destroyed and not released for distribution."

A separate peanut butter outbreak in 2009 not related to Sunland was linked to hundreds of illnesses and nine deaths.

Expo speakers to cover viticulture, marketing, production, direct sales

Wine Industry NetworkSANTA ROSA ? North Coast Wine Industry Expo, set for Dec. 5 in Santa Rosa, will feature a dozen local wine industry experts in growing, production, law, marketing and sales.

The four expo conference sessions?will?have three speakers each and run from?9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The expo is being held at?the Sonoma County Fairgrounds.

The first panel will cover viticulture, particularly what growers can do to manage contracts and labor at a time of high demand for grapes. Speakers include Hector Bedolla, owner of Grape Wise and ranch manager for Stuhlmuller Vineyards, Dickenson Peatman & Fogarty contract and real property attorney Caroline Boller, and Mark Chandler of?wine and food marketing consulting firm?Chandler & Company.

Ms. Boller plans to lead a a discussion of key contractual protections for growers when negotiating grape purchase agreements, followed by the status of vineyard management companies under California law and implications for vineyard management agreements.

Next will be a panel discussion of marketing, particularly related to connecting wineries directly to consumers. Discussing the value of social media in this pursuit as well as properly collecting and managing consumer data will be social media critic Michael Houlihan, a founder of Barefoot Cellars, a management consultant with Houlihan & Jones and an investor in telesales firm Provino Wine Services; social networking analysis software developer and proponent Paul Mabray of Napa-based VinTank; and Ryan Thurman of Santa Rosa-based Contact Center Compliance Corp.

?Building the Barefoot brand from coast to coast, we found there is no substitute for direct, real time communication,? Mr. Houlihan said. ?People buy from people and especially where larger sums are involved. Telephone communication can provide the level of personalized attention necessary to sell higher priced wine at full price.?

?Balancing compliance and marketing in the age of increased social media and regulatory enforcement trends requires an evolving overall strategy,? Mr. Thurman said. ?Discover the hidden demographics behind wireless users and learn how to target wine prospects with better data.?

The production panel will explore new versus long-used technologies. Speakers include winemakers Sara Fowler of Peju Province Winery on the Napa County side of Los Carneros appellation, Lisa Amaroli of Benziger Vineyards in Sonoma Valley and Nick Goldschmidt of Goldschmidt Vineyards near Healdsburg.

Tackling strategies for managing deals with distributors and brokers in the coming year will be Dan Kosta, of Kosta Browne Winery; Julie Pedroncelli St. John of Pedroncelli Winery, and Janet Viader of Viader Vineyards.

?Managing national distribution for a small winery ? 4,000 cases ? it is sometimes hard to get a response from national distributors,? Ms. Viader said. Her advice will be on establishing good communication with them, getting them to pay attention to such a small brand, balancing distribution between on- and off-premise markets, and winning placements on national wine lists with higher prices.

Ms. Pedroncelli St. John plans to share her quarter century of experience in marketing her family?s small-winery brand in the U.S. three-tier distribution system as well as for export.

?I am more an on-the-road brand ambassador, telling our story both via sales meetings as well as one-on-one sales calls with distributor reps,? she said.

Mr. Kosta will focus on Kosta Browne?s approach to limited distribution of a?primarily direct-to-consumer brand via the?three-tier system and allocation. ?

Model sheds light on chemistry that sparked origin of life

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? The question of how life began on a molecular level has been a longstanding problem in science. However, recent mathematical research sheds light on a possible mechanism by which life may have gotten a foothold in the chemical soup that existed on the early Earth.

Researchers have proposed several competing theories for how life on Earth could have gotten its start, even before the first genes or living cells came to be. Despite differences between various proposed scenarios, one theme they all have in common is a network of molecules that have the ability to work together to jumpstart and speed up their own replication -- two necessary ingredients for life. However, many researchers find it hard to imagine how such a molecular network could have formed spontaneously -- with no precursors -- from the chemical environment of early Earth.

"Some say it's equivalent to a tornado blowing through a junkyard and assembling the random pieces of metal and plastic into a Boeing 747," said co-author Wim Hordijk, a visiting scientist at the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center in Durham, North Carolina, and a participant in an astrobiology meeting held there last year.

In a previous study published in 2004, Hordijk and colleague Mike Steel of the University of Canterbury in New Zealand used a mathematical model of simple chemical reactions to show that such networks might form more easily than many researchers thought. Indeed, biochemists have recently created such networks in the lab.

In a new study published this year, Hordijk, Steel, and colleague Stuart Kauffman of the University of Vermont analyzed the structure of the networks in their mathematical models and found a plausible mechanism by which they could have evolved to produce the building blocks of life we know today, such as cell membranes or nucleic acids.

"It turns out that if you look at the structure of the networks of molecules [in our models], very often they're composed of smaller subsets of molecules with the same self-perpetuating capabilities," Hordijk explained.

By combining, splitting, and recombining to form new types of networks from their own subunits, the models indicate that these subsets of molecules could give rise to increasingly large and complex networks of chemical reactions, and, presumably, life.

"These results could have major consequences for how we think life may have originated from pure chemistry," Hordijk writes.

The study will appear in the December 2012 print issue of the journal Acta Biotheoretica.
