?A Drunkard in the Gutter Is Just Where He Ought To Be?

In making his case for laissez-faire, Sumner highlighted one of the enduring paradoxes of American politics. ?It is commonly asserted that there are in the United States no classes, and any allusion to classes is resented,? he noted. ?On the other hand, we constantly read and hear discussion of social topics in which the existence of social classes is assumed as a simple fact.? This was particularly true of the 1870s, which witnessed a serious financial panic and depression, followed by a major national railroad strike. In response, reformers began to argue for government to take a greater role in aiding the poor and in softening the rough edges of industrial capitalism.

White supremacist sheriff candidate says he?s just a ?concerned citizen?

Shaun Winkler stands next to Aryan Nations leader Richard Butler during a 2001 Idaho protest (AP/Jason Hunt)

Distasteful and often baseless accusations of racial insensitivity are nothing new in politics. But one man running for sheriff in Idaho proudly proclaims his prejudice but says he won't discriminate on the job.

According to the Bonner County Daily Bee, local sheriff candidate Shaun Patrick Winkler, 33, has ties to the Aryan Nations and Church of Jesus Christ-Christian, both white supremacist organizations. And despite having taken part in race-based protests, Winkler says he's running in opposition to "increasing federal reach" into the county.

"Whether people will believe me or not, it will be entirely up to their own discretion," Winkler told the paper.

Winkler is running for the Republican nomination in Bonner County, which will be held on May 15, against two other men, including the current sheriff.

"I don't look at myself as a vigilante," Winkler said. "I look at myself as a concerned citizen."

Back in 2001, the creator of Prodigy Internet service provider, Greg Carr, purchased the Aryan Nations' headquarters in Idaho and turned it into a anti-racism museum and human rights center.

Infective Ink ? March 19th 2012: Horrible Wedding Proposals Victor's ...

Professor Victor Long, pensive index finger on goatee, remarked, ?Far too many marriages end in divorce, and that?s a national tragedy.?

With these gloomy words, he availed himself of a slither of Manchego. At the Sociology Department?s Christmas Party, pickings were slim.

?Well, since Victor and I aren?t married, we don?t have to worry about that particular tragedy, do we?? said his long-time partner, Professor Gail Johnson, rather cheerfully.

Another sociology professor, taller than Victor Long and far more dashing, eyed pretty Gail appreciatively. ?If you?re not married, the two of you can?t technically commit adultery or can you??

?It would be labeled infidelity and I guess it would not qualify as a tragedy,? Gail replied with her gift for clarity, and a bit of coyness besides.

This innocuous exchange alerted Professor Victor Long to the practicality, as opposed to the virtue, of marriage. Another man might have proposed then and there. But Victor felt that a proposal must have, as it were, a certain dramatic flourish.

And so, on Valentine?s Day, he donned an ascot and escorted Gail to a dimly-lit eatery. Champagne and caviar had been ordered for, as he put it, ?this very special night.?

?This is lovely,? said Gail, munching away. ?I?m starved. I think the whole-grain bread?s fantastic here.?

?Tonight is not merely about whole-grain breads.? Victor blinked several times at his manly declamation

?No, the steak?s exceptional too ? the aging process makes the difference.? Gail examined the menu like an epicurean scholar. ?Ah, wild halibut, so many decisions, really.?

?Decisions!? thundered Victor, terrifying a bespectacled couple who sat nearby.

Gail re-filled his champagne to calm his nerves. ?Restaurants do involve decisions, but it?s not a big deal,? she said in a soothing tone. ?We always manage and most of the time, we?re fine, aren?t we??

?Important decisions,? he continued, undeterred. ?The future, that?s what this night is about.?

?Metaphorically, I guess,? Gail said as she studied the lengthy wine list. ?It?s tricky following champagne with wine, especially a good wine. You might call it a metaphor for the future, in its way.?

Victor?s voice became shrill. ?No, it?s not a metaphor. I?ve decided that you and I, the two of us, that is, should form a permanent relationship.?

Gail signaled the waiter. ?A few crab-cakes while we?re deciding about the main course, and please, sauce on the side.? She turned to Victor, ?I thought we already had a relationship, Victor. Isn?t that what we are celebrating, tonight, our relationship??

?Marriage is what I meant.? Victor took out a sheet of paper on which he had typed a list.

?Ah, you want to discuss the prospect of marriage in our future. Is that correct??

?Exactly, and I?ve prepared a statement? it?s a list of the qualities that I feel make you an outstanding candidate for marriage, in my humble view, of course.?

?A woman really doesn?t require flowers, I guess,? said Gail, heaping caviar on a slice of bread.

Victor forged ahead. ?To start, you are a high-achievement personality with a stable financial record. Not that your earnings played a role in my thinking, but earnings can?t be ignored in today?s world, and you?re well aware that they enhance your desirability. Plus, your academic tenure, well, that speaks for itself.? He chuckled at his own wit.

?As does your own, Victor,? Gail noted.

?Thank you, Gail, I appreciate the sentiment. Now, on the domestic side, some might even call you messy or sloppy or worse. But with your advanced culinary skills, I feel that you balance out the picture and on trade-off, it?s a more valued asset. In any event, we have a great house-keeper.?

?I adore Nelly,? agreed Gail, emphasizing the word adore like a patient teacher.

?You are also a highly social person with a wide network of contacts that will serve you well. Naturally, not all of your friends can be to my liking ? as why should they be?? Here, he nodded, agreeing with himself. ?Still social relationships in themselves are a positive thing, and you are well-liked.?

Gail sighed, perhaps relieved by the sight of crab-cakes or by her perceived virtues.

Victor went on. ?On the other hand, I do not enjoy your family. This has been a concern since they are not interesting people. In fact, I?d go so far as to call them boring. But it speaks well of you that you tolerate them. I give you high marks for that since I suppose you?re related to them and it?s not your fault.?

Gail said, in a false-bright tone, ?Shiraz would be a welcome change, especially if I do the salmon and you do steak. There?s a nice spicy one on the list.?

?I have more, Gail, including some comments on your physical person,? Victor said, tapping his list.

To his surprise, Gail grabbed the page and ripped it into tiny shreds, which flew in all direction, causing a commotion among the waiters.

?You need to be in therapy, Victor, long-term intensive therapy. This is the world?s most horrible proposal.? Gail sobbed.

Victor gulped. ?I guess it needed more revision.?

?First of all, men are supposed to buy jewelry for the woman? it?s called a ring. They are widely available at local retailers.?

?A ring,? he said as if considering the rings of Saturn.

?Second of all, it?s customary to begin with a declaration of love, Victor.? She dried her eyes, handed him a crab-cake, and the two ate in silence.

?I think these crab-cakes would work for the reception,? Victor said after a while. ?And you can write the wedding speeches because that?s another strength of yours, always knowing the right thing to say and the right thing to do.?

?I do?? Gail asked.
Victor nodded. ?That part about love, for example, that is really an excellent addition. Maybe you add something about happiness too.?

Gail waved to the waiter again. ?We?re ready now.?

?We are??

She smiled. ?Absolutely, Victor? yes.?

Stock Investment ? Plan Your Strategies Before Investment | World ...

Professional investors normally make a good profit in the stock market over a long period. The reason behind this is, they have dedicated?research analysts, they have knowledge to pick the right stocks and moreover, they stick to their own plans.

But this is not true for retail investors. Retail investors see the stock market as an option to ?Make some Quick Money?. Being an?retail investor, they don?t have a solid plan, no knowledge of stock picking and moreover totally dependant on market rumors.

But is nothing but gambling. So, they face the same fate as most of the gamblers does?- ?loose your wealth? in no time.

Here are the plan for retail investors to make money in stock market -

Objective - You are not investing to become rich overnight. Remember, one stock price even double or triple in few days will not be enough to make you super rich.

Your objective is to be an investor for rest of your life. So, protecting your capital is more important then earning some quick return. Remember this, even after this recession also, index has come to 12000 points, starting from 100. in 1980. So, objective is not to stay short and risk your money. But stay as long as possible to ripe the benefit.

What to Buy (Selecting Stocks) -Stock selection is the key for successful investment. But this require knowledge and?skills. This will be hard for an individual investors to select a stock. Our advice is, depend on some professional to select the right stock for you.

When to Buy?-?As we have said earlier, leave the responsibility of stock selection and when to buy on a professional you trust. Remember, don?t go by market rumors. Stick to one individual or organization for that.

When To Sale - This is probably the most important decision. You have to take this decisions yourself. There are a number of simple technique to determine the action plan after purchasing a stock. Below are some of the simple technique -

If you purchased a stock for Rs 100 each, take a piece of paper and right down a your actions for all types of situations ? increase in price, decrease in price and if price remain stable for a long period of time. Then access the price of the stock according your action plan and act accordingly. You don?t have control over the price of the stock, but you can control your strategies and actions. Just concentrate on that.
Do not marry with a stock. Never let your emotions?influence your actions.?
There is no need to?evaluate the stock price every day. Until there is a unusual situation, only evaluate the stock when they publish their quarterly result.?This is the time when when most of the stock price will change.
Stick to large cap stocks. Never ever venture in small cap or mid cap stocks. It is better to spend money in lotteries than in these stocks. If you are not an pro of stock market, it is next to impossible to select a winning small cap or mid cap stocks.
Do not get confused by a number of stock tips in a month. Subscribe to those stock advisors who recommend?not more than?2 stocks in a month. Otherwise you will get confused to select the stock to invest out of such a huge recommendations.?
Set your goal on profit target for the year on your total investment portfolio. Keep it reasonable and work around it. Do not take an profit target which is not self convincing.?Try to ascertain the reasons for such profit target you have taken.
And last, but not the least, have self discipline. Once you have finalized your plan of actions on specific stock as well as on your portfolio, you need to follow that consistently. If you are not a self disciplined person, probably you should stay away from investing in stocks.

Reporter killed in Syria recalled as truth seeker

OYSTER BAY, N.Y. (AP) ? Journalist Marie Colvin was remembered Monday as a fearless seeker of truth by mourners from media mogul Rupert Murdoch to the immigrants who counted on her dispatches from their strife-ridden homelands to make a difference in global policy.

A huge American flag was suspended over Main Street in Oyster Bay, the quiet oceanside town where the 56-year-old New York native grew up and decided to become a reporter.

And when her casket emerged from at St. Dominic's Roman Catholic Church after her funeral Mass, a group of Sri Lankan immigrants held a placard dubbing her the "uncrowned queen of intrepid journalists."

Colvin worked for the Sunday Times of London, which is owned by Murdoch's News Corp. She was killed on Feb. 22 when the building that served as a makeshift media center in the city of Homs was struck by a Syrian army mortar.

"She was looking for beauty and truth, and she was telling the world about the vicious crimes," said Malek Jandali a Syrian-American musician who came from Atlanta to attend the funeral.

"Her last moments were steps from my family's house in Homs," said Jandali, adding that anti-government sympathizers hoped to have a street or a square there named after Colvin.

Seetharam Sivam, an immigrant from Sri Lanka, said he wanted to pay his respects because Colvin's writing a decade ago had brought attention to violence involving the Tamil ethnic group. Colvin lost an eye while covering the civil conflict in Sri Lanka in 2001 and wore an eye patch after that.

"She took the risks and went into war zones. She brought the truth of the Tamil plight to the world," said Sivam, an electrical engineer from Holbrook, Long Island, who lost his father in the conflict Colvin covered. "It's one reason the United States and other countries had the information, and could act on it."

Colvin died hours after her last report on the government crackdown in Syria, where thousands of civilians have been killed since a popular uprising began a year ago.

Days after her death, British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Syria was led by a "criminal regime." He vowed that his country will continue to investigate "the crimes that are taking place" ? including the scene where Colvin appeared in her last dispatch ? "so that one day those responsible for them will have to answer for their actions."

In her final live broadcast with CNN's Anderson Cooper, Colvin told him the Syrians were shelling "a city of cold, starving civilians." She spoke as a baby boy lay dying near her.

"It's a complete and utter lie that they are only going after terrorists," she added. "There are no military targets here."

It was a challenge to get Colvin's body out of Syria through territory controlled by the government. A Polish diplomat received her remains from the Syrian Red Crescent, flying them home to New York via Paris.

After the funeral, Sunday Times editor John Witherow said the effort included contacts with Russia, considered Syria's strongest ally.

Now, "she'll be inspirational to journalists all over the world because she was always there to help people," said Witherow, adding that he's received sympathy messages written by oppressed people worldwide whose stories Colvin had told, from the Tamils to residents of Kosovo.

To do that, she took huge risks as a journalist.

"She was extraordinarily brave, because she thought she could make a difference," Witherow said. "She said, 'They did terrible things, and I must tell the world.'"

During the service, hundreds of mourners in the church sang the hymn "Be Not Afraid."

While many praised her daring and empathy, her best friend from Yale University shared another side of the war reporter ? the "pandemonium" and "mirth," as Katrina Heron called the lighter moments of Colvin's visits to the United States. Speeding along a Long Island highway, she ran out of gas because she mistook the temperature gauge for the fuel gauge, said Heron, adding that Colvin was "full of passion, full of belief" ? and full of fun.

When the correspondent was back in Iraq several years ago, she emailed her friend, "I'm in Baghdad. You'd love it here. It's just like New York, except without cars, restaurants, shops, telephones, electricity or taxis."

And wherever she went, she carried her reporter's notebooks ? and her pearl necklace, Heron said.

As the funeral ended, Colvin's mother, Rosemarie Colvin, stood in front of her daughter's casket with tear-filled eyes. She reached out to touch it with her right hand before putting a hand-held cross and a white rose atop the casket.

Colvin is survived by two brothers, two sisters and her mother.

If he has loving family members nearby that he trusts to help him, he?s fortunate. Unscrupulous members of the family or friends can hurt him irreparably. He needs an advocate, like Gary Lightman to help see to his interests.

Legislation has been around in place for several years to safeguard seniors who can no more protect themselves. There are three main groups of elder law. Property planning and management deal with the tax implications that arise when an estate is relinquished. Ongoing health concerns or disabilities impacted by Medicaid are another category. Finally, financial concerns which involve guardianships, powers of attorney or similar issues are viewed as the main laws pertaining to elder care.

Even when an elderly person has trusted family close by, he must feel that his needs are going to be met. He needs assurance that, if he?s injured, someone will see that he gets medical treatment. He needs an advocate to head to bat for him when it?s vital to dispute hospital expenses. He needs to feel certain that his financial pursuits have been handled by somebody that wants what?s best for him. If he has a trusted relative willing to tackle these jobs, he is lucky indeed.

But sadly there are many elderly people that don?t have this choice. An elderly person may be one of the last living members of his family, and therefore no one to help him. Or worse, there may be someone in his family who can care for him, but doesn?t choose to or is only interested in stealing from him. For this aged person, an elder law attorney is his best hope.

An elder law attorney is knowledgeable and experienced in many different aspects of law because he needs to be. An elderly individual who needs assistance negotiating an issue with a landlord or a loan company needs someone who knows property law. An elderly person who has had inadequate or unacceptable hospital treatment may need a medical negligence lawsuit submitted on his behalf. An experienced elder care attorney, like Gary P. Lightman knows all the details that must be considered.

Elder law attorneys, like Gary Lightman also provide information for the elderly on estate planning so that an bequest isn?t taken up by taxes. An attorney might help an aged client get through the somewhat incomprehensive adjustments and minutiae of Medicaid guidelines and disability protection. He is able to setup powers of attorney and medical health directives in order that the elderly client?s wishes are going to be honored.

The best way to start looking for a good attorney to deal with an elderly client?s case is to get recommendations and suggestions. Friends as well as other family members as well as agencies that provide senior services might be able to supply a listing of attorneys who specialize in helping the elderly. It?s also important to check an attorney?s rating using the local bar association. If possible, get references from the attorney and contact them.

Legal counsel shouldn?t be hired before a primary interview or consultation. The next step is to inquire about questions about the attorney?s experience of handling situations and cases associated with issues of concern for the elderly. The attorney?s compassion for that elderly must be evident through the initial interview; if he seems to be cold or disinterested in making sure an elderly client is treated fairly, locate another attorney.

Having been in law for about 30 years, Gary P. Lightman is known throughout the legal industry as a smart, skilled and adept lawyer. He boasts an extensive resume to complement his impressive educational background, and with the recommendation from his clients and peers, it is easy to see why Gary Lightman has garnered such praise.

School Vs. Church: Fairfax Backs Down

ANNANDALE, Va (WUSA) -- Religious freedom and an about face for Fairfax County schools.

A high school honor student sued the school district after an advisor refused to credit her for volunteer hours she served at her church.

But now the schools have decided to give?the unnamed girl?the credits -- and reinstate her to the honor society.

In her lawsuit, the 17 year old senior at the prestigious Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, alleges that by denying her credit for these volunteer work hours at her church Sunday school, the school here is effectively denying her a shot at an up to 13-thousand dollar scholarship, and violating her fundamental right to religious freedom.

"There's no honor in saying to an honor student, 'your community service at a church doesn't count,' says Jordan Lorence who represented the teenager on behalf of the conservative Alliance Defense Fund.

The "bible-believing Christian" told her adviser she was "at a loss" to understand why Fairfax Schools chose to "discriminate against" her 46 hours volunteer work at her church. "It was clearly wrong and unconstitutional," says Lorence.

The school district says the just-filed lawsuit was the first time it heard about the problem.?Spokesman John Torre says the Honor Society adviser misread the school policy. "The student will be credited with the service hours she performed at her church and she will have her full membership restored in the National Honor Society."

Lawyers for the 17 year old?say this is not the end of it. They still want the schools to rewrite the official policy on volunteer hours at church. And they want the high school senior made whole for any scholarship deadlines she might have missed.

Fairfax County says it is reviewing its written policy of volunteer hours.

The lawyers from the Arizona-based Alliance Defense Fund have brought a number of these First Amendment Freedom of Religion lawsuits around the country.

2 dead, 7 injured in Pittsburgh clinic shooting

A gunman opened fire at a psychiatric clinic Thursday on the campus of The University of Pittsburgh.?WPXI's Rick Earle reports.

By NBC News, msnbc.com staff and news services

Updated at 5:02 p.m. ET: PITTSBURGH -- A gunman opened fire inside a psychiatric clinic in Pittsburgh on Thursday in a shooting that left two people dead, including the?gunman, and seven others injured, authorities said.

Mayor Luke Ravenstahl said a gunman entered the front door about 1:40 p.m. with two semiautomatic?handguns and started firing. The gunman was killed in an exchange of gunfire with police, Ravenstahl said at a news conference. Hospital officials said seven people were injured, although at least one of the injuries was not a?gunshot wound.??

A man who was in a nearby waiting room when the gunfire erupted said people scrambled to hide and decided they'd rush the?shooter if he entered but he never did in the 15 or so minutes the ordeal lasted. Police later reported one of the dead was the gunman, according to NBC News affiliate WXPI.com.

There were no details about the second dead person. University of Pittsburgh Medical Center spokesman Paul Wood said it was unclear whether the injured people were patients, employees or visiting family members.

Among the injured was an?officer who had been shot in the leg in the lobby of the clinic and taken to a nearby hospital about 1:45 p.m.

'Hide! Hide!'
Gregory Brant said he was in a waiting room on the first floor of the clinic building when pandemonium broke out.

"We heard a bunch of yelling, some shooting, people yelling, 'Hide! Hide!" he said. "Everyone's yelling, 'Stay down!"'

Brant, 53, and six other people, including a young girl and her parents, barricaded themselves inside the waiting room. But he said they did not feel safe because there were doors with windows along adjacent walls.

"The way the room was arranged, if he (the gunman) had gone to either window and would have seen us in there, he could have done whatever he wanted," Brant said.

The group crouched in a corner, hoping the gunman wouldn't see them as he went past, Brant said. The men in the group decided on the spot that if the gunman entered the room, they would rush him.

"We were kind of sitting ducks," Brant said. "Luckily, he didn't see us in there, and we didn't make eye contact with him."

Neighboring buildings were placed on lockdown after gunfire erupted near the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Oakland, a neighborhood east of downtown Pittsburgh.

Wood said media reports about a possible second armed suspect and a hostage situation at the clinic or at UPMC Presbyterian hospital were unfounded. "There was a rumor out there that there was a second gunman. That, we believe, was never true," Wood said.

Keith Srakocic / AP

Police gather on DeSoto street near the front entrance to the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic on the University of Pittsburgh campus, on Thursday in Pittsburgh.

A SWAT team was on the scene. A street was blocked off, and the area thronged with police. While most students were away on spring break, offices and buildings have been open.

Tweets from the UPMC said injured people were being treated there. "Police have told us there were 9 total victims at WPIC/Western Psych. 2 of whom have been confirmed dead. 7 being treated at UPMC Presby,?? UPMC officials posted on the hospital's Twitter feed.

Hospital officials said?two patients were in intensive care, two were released and three were being admitted. All were expected to survive.

'Terribly sad'
Pete Finelli, who lives two blocks from the clinic and once worked there as a student nursing assistant, said security guards are always at the part of the building where it the shooting is believed to have occurred, on the ground floor.

Patient rooms are on the upper floors, he said, but anyone on the first floor would have to be someone being either admitted or discharged.

"The only place a person would be on the first floor is the emergency room," he said.

Lawton Snyder, executive director of Pitt's Eye and Ear Foundation, said he and two other staffers were locked down about a block away, in a building that connects to the clinic. He said it was unnerving.

"Obviously I'm terribly sad for those injured. We're just hoping everybody's OK and things are resolved quickly and that they can apprehend those who are responsible," he said.

The clinic describes itself on its website as a top academic-based psychiatric care center. The University of Pittsburgh's Psychiatry Department is on the campus.

Chef Paula Deen's attorneys say accusations false

(AP) ? Attorneys for Paula Deen said Tuesday that a former worker who claimed she was sexually harassed and subjected to a hostile work environment at a restaurant co-owned by Deen and her brother made false claims after the celebrity chef refused to pay her to keep quiet.

A lawsuit filed Monday by Lisa Jackson "makes false allegations against Paula Deen and they will be proven false in court," said a statement from the Oliver Maner law firm, representing Deen. The law firm said the suit was filed in a local court after the Southern cooking star refused to pay the woman to "address false claims."

Attorneys for Jackson, a former general manager at the restaurant, didn't immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

Jackson said in the lawsuit that her doctor encouraged her to quit her post at Uncle Bubba's Seafood and Oyster House in Savannah because she suffered from panic attacks and other stress. The restaurant is owned by Deen and her brother Bubba Hiers.

Jackson, who is white, was hired at the restaurant in February 2005 and within months was promoted to general manager.

Jackson said in the lawsuit that Hiers routinely made inappropriate sexual and racial remarks and that she heard both Hiers and Deen use racial slurs. The woman also said in the suit that she saw Hiers violently shake a black employee and that he fostered a workplace environment of intimidation.

Deen's law firm said they had investigated Jackson's claims and had unsuccessfully attempted to address them with her.

"She has made baseless, inflammatory allegations, threatening to go to the press and ruin Paula Deen's reputation and the reputation of her businesses unless we paid her a large sum of money," the firm's statement said. "We refused to bow to that kind of pressure and refused to pay money to address false claims."

Jackson's lawsuit, filed in Chatham County Superior Court, seeks unspecified damages.

Hiers soon began targeting her with unwanted advances, the suit said, adding that he watched pornography in the small office the two shared. He also distributed pictures of two women having sex at an office meeting and complained about heavier staff members, the complaint said.

She said in the suit that Hiers also required black staff members at his restaurant to use the back entrance and banned them from using a customer restroom that white staffers were allowed to use.

Jackson said she routinely suffered from panic attacks that often began when Hiers came to work each morning. The situation came to a head in August 2010 when Jackson said Hiers grabbed her face during a dinner for vendors at the restaurant and declared "I love you," then later screamed at her and spit in her face, according to the suit.

Jackson said she left her job days later after her doctor suggested quitting would improve her health.

Education

Blackboard_by_Winslow_Homer,_1877
Monday I watched a CBS This Morning interview with Joel Klein, former NYC Department of Education Chancellor.? The five minute interview can be seen on the CBS website.

The first questions to Mr. Klein concerned the fact that the candidates are not discussing education.? A graphic showed that out of more than 40 hours of candidate questions, less than twenty minutes was spent on education, a dozen questions out of more than 800.? Reference was made to the esteem in which many other countries hold their teachers ? much higher than we do. Just over half way into the interview, the reporter moved on to questions about the Murdoch scandals and education was forgotten, again.

Our media creates ? and destroys ? heroes.? They are aware of this ability, yet ignore teachers (and education) for the prurient glimpses of scandal and celebrity-hood.? We collude with the media by responding to their lead.

A few days ago, one of our church members ? a teacher ? wrote:

Just a word to 7th and 8th graders. Life is all about attitude, strive to have a good spirit. Use as few words as possible, let your actions and your attitude do the talking for you. Go to school every day, find something good about every teacher and then tell your teacher. It's all about attitude and how you look at things. School and teachers are not your enemy, but your friends. Remember you may lose lots of things in life, but you can't lose a good education. Work hard and have a great spirit and good things will happen. Keep life simple and have a great year, good luck.? Coach Horton

That?s not just for 7/8th graders ? it?s important to all of us. Education is no longer important to Americans, and our work force is impacted.

We adults need to follow Coach Horton?s admonition, too.? We need to find the good in our teachers and help them mold the next generation.? We need to lift them much higher than we do those who simply entertain us ? unless entertainment is all we want out of life.

How does this fit with the Bible?? The verse our school children should learn very early is:

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15 KJV)

Solomon?s Proverbs refer to knowledge many times ? my favorite is:

Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold. (Proverbs 8:10 KJV)

But ? that?s not what we?re teaching them, is it?

My husband and I have no children in school, but we pay taxes to provide for those who do.? We need to be just as interested in the teachers as their students? parents are. We do have grand and great-grandchildren in school and their future is important to us.? They need instruction and knowledge. They need the best of opportunities to achieve their goals. Those opportunities come with the proper education in order to study, becoming unashamed workmen.

PFT: Texans sign Foster to five-year deal

nfl_g_brees_payton_300Getty Images

It?s Monday.? Welcome back to work.? Before the boss starts looking over your shoulder, here?s a chance to get caught up on one of the biggest scandals in NFL history, which the league wisely slipped through the late Friday afternoon five hole.

Right after you turned off your computer and headed home for a weekend of not surfing the Internet on your own time.

You?re likely feeling a little inadequate right now, because you don?t know the details as well as you?d like.? That?s why we?re going to take you on a quick tour of the 29 bounty-related stories that have been posted here since Friday.

Yep, while you weren?t working, we were.

Then again, this really ain?t work.

It all started with a bolt-from-the-blue press release.? The league has concluded that the Saints ran from 2009 through 2011 a system of payments to defensive players for, among other things, inflicting injury on opponents.

Coach Sean Payton knew about the program, and defensive coordinator Gregg Williams administered it.

Bounties fueled the Saints? 2009 playoff run. The Vikings, who lost to the Saints in the 2009 NFC championship after linebacker Jonathan Vilma offered $10,000 to whoever knocks Brett Favre out of the game, aren?t talking, but plenty of you believe the news taints the Saints? Super Bowl win.

Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner?s final game included being blown up by former Saints defensive end Bobby McCray a week before the Vikings-Saints playoff.? Warner nevertheless thinks bounties have been part of the NFL for a long time.

The NFL insists Saints owner Tom Benson didn?t know about the bounties.? In what likely will be regarded in time as one of the great sports-related understatements, Benson issued a statement calling the findings ?troubling.?

Williams has confessed, even though former Saints safety Darren Sharper apparently didn?t get the memo.? In a statement issued through his new employer, the Rams, Williams called it a ?terrible mistake,? and he said ?we knew it was wrong while we were doing it.?

Which, by definition, means it wasn?t a mistake.

It?s also harder to accept the notion that it was a mistake, given allegations that Williams apparently ran a bounty program when he worked for the Redskins and the Bills.? The league will investigate the situation in Washington.

Former Colts coach Tony Dungy told PFT on Friday night that the Titans had a bounty on Peyton Manning, whose ongoing neck problems possibly trace to a hit he took from the Redskins in 2006, under Williams.

The league says it?s not aware of bounties in any other cities, and former Redskins coach Joe Gibbs says he didn?t know about any of it in D.C.? This means either that the investigators didn?t ask Williams if he used bounties before his time with the Saints, or that they asked him and he denied it.? Regardless, they?ll be asking Williams about it on Monday.

Speaking of denials, the investigation regarding the Saints nearly died on the vine because everyone involved said it didn?t happen.? Now that the league has found evidence that the bounty program did indeed exist, those who were dishonest to the investigators should face enhanced penalties.

Saints G.M. Mickey Loomis also apparently lied to owner Tom Benson, and Loomis definitely failed to put the practice to an end once Loomis was told to do so by Benson.? The fact that Loomis reportedly won?t be fired for such a flagrant example of insubordination invites speculation that Loomis is simply covering for Benson.

Benson?s own punishment likely will consist of a hefty fine imposed on his team and a forfeiture of draft picks, even though the team traded in 2011 its first-round pick in 2012.? (If the NFL really wants to punish the Saints, the league should take away its franchise tag.)

Lengthy suspensions are expected for Williams, Loomis, and coach Sean Payton, along with multiple players.? The expected absence of key members of the organization as of Week One helps explain the team?s decision to volunteer for the Hall of Fame game, which will give them two extra weeks and one extra preseason game to get ready for the inevitable absence of people like Payton.

A decision on punishment will be made by the March 25 league meetings.? The NFLPA has vowed to review the NFL?s report, but the union has taken no position on the situation, yet.

Some wonder whether a few extra dollars makes a difference to a highly-compensated pro football player.? Apparently, it does.? Which makes cash money the NFL?s equivalent of a helmet sticker.

Of course, helmet stickers don?t constitute taxable income.? Cash money does, and the IRS could start poking around.

Other law-enforcement agencies could get involved as the situation unfolds.? This story is far closer to the beginning than the end, and we?ll be following it every step of the way.

Now, get back to work.

Anti-dis-arts-and-entertainmentism: The Adventures of Tintin

The Adventures of Tintin

Grade: D

Cast: Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Daniel Craig

Director: Steven Spielberg

Free Admission Granted?

In a parallel universe, a young filmmaker considers the long, overpowering tradition of computer-generated animation and ? eureka ? elides upon a great idea. What if I draw a bunch of pictures on consecutive sheets of paper and run my thumb across the edges?

The ensuing film becomes a major success, launching a revolution in animation. The gripping story of a spirited roadrunner and the driven but hapless coyote Javert who pursues him, critics praise its creativity and existential vision, carving out a stunning new fictional landscape completely shorn from reality.? They are also astounded and delighted by the process. Did this young artist really spend hour upon hour creating thousands upon thousands of drawings? What nerve! What dedication!?

In this year of critical nostalgia run wild, I?ll play my card here. I find the trend toward more realistic computer generated animation alienating and counterproductive. Steven Spielberg?s The Adventures of Tintin takes tremendous pains to make its people and places seem only a little past the edge of reality. In a field where the purpose is escapist in nature, I question whether that?s an improvement.?

On the other hand, I recognize whe a film is uniquely made, even when I don?t find it riveting, and I dislike it when a critic never admits this. Tintin ? a childlike adventure with a French boy detective, a tipsy sea captain, and a pirate treasure ? is definitely inventive.?At one point,?one of the film?s realistic-ish cartoon characters goes to a park, he has an old-fashioned cartoon portrait made of himself, one that makes him look like a teenage Dennis the Menace, suggesting how far computers and animation have wandered from pen and paper and how close they have come in mimicking realism.?

The film?s animation isn?t necessarily animation. It?s a motion-capture process that?s translated into animation, generated by filming actors? movements and then painting over them with pixels. By the time we reach a pirate-ship battle the inspiration clearly isn?t Disney or Miyazaki, but the high-seas CG ?live action? of Pirates of the Caribbean. What?s the difference between a cartoon and a ?live? CG extravaganza except a few algorithms?

So it?s quite impressive technically, but I feel when we go barreling through an Arab village with an eagle, a motorcycle, and a bursting dam - flashing from angle to angle in one motion -?that something is being lost, or missed, or shuffled over.

So while I sit in the corner lamenting the disappearance of the simplicities of yesteryear, allow me to point out the villain of Tintin bears a considerable resemblance to Spielberg friend Stanley Kubrick. Apparently the late director didn?t go to Heaven or Hell, but to a giant HAL 9000? mainframe spouting mindless entertainment in Hollywood, which would probably seem like Hell to Kubrick. While seeing Kubrick as the misanthropic villain isn?t a surprise, I never really expected Stanley to be such a good swordfighter.

Dell XPS 13

This ain't no MacBook Air clone. Sure, the Dell XPS 13 ($999.99 direct) will be compared to the Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (Thunderbolt) ($1,299 direct, 4 stars), because all 13.3-inch ultrabooks are. But instead of building just another skinny aluminum wedge, Dell has lavished design and, dare we say it, craftsmanship on Intel's ultrabook concept. The result stands with the Lenovo IdeaPad U300s ($1,495 direct, 4 stars) and Editors' Choice HP Folio 13 ($1,048.99 direct, 4 stars) as the status symbols of the category. And if you can forgive its skimpy port selection?really? not even a memory-card slot??it could be the most tempting of the lot.

At 0.7 by 12.4 by 8.1 inches (HWD), the XPS 13 is one of the most compact ultrabooks?according to Dell, 14 percent smaller in volume than the MacBook Air 13-inch. Certainly the 2.96-pound portable won't be a burden in your briefcase. Like most ultrabooks, the Dell XPS 13 comes in plain and fancy configurations. The $999.99 base model tested here includes a 1.6GHz Intel Core i5 processor and 128GB solid-state drive, along with 4GB of RAM and Windows 7 Home Premium. Stepping up to the $1,499.99 version gets you a 1.7GHz Core i7 chip and a 256GB SSD.

Design
The Stealth bomber wishes it had as many high-tech materials as the XPS 13. The top cover and a ring around the base are machined aluminum, while the base itself is carbon fiber composite. The palm rest is magnesium alloy with soft-touch paint. Finally, the nearly bezel-free 13.3-inch display is covered in edge-to-edge Gorilla Glass that adds durability and looks gorgeous (think of the best smartphone or tablet screen you've seen).

The overall effect is striking, from the silvery aluminum cover to the metal plate on the bottom with etched Windows and Intel logos (no stickers on the palm rest!). It's also sturdy, with virtually no screen flexing and no vibration during typing. Our only complaint is that, when closed, there's almost no protrusion or screen edge to grip, making the Dell hard to open.

The screen settles for the 1,366 by 768 resolution that's the baseline among netbooks, missing the chance to impress us with the 1,440 by 900 of the MacBook Air or the 1,600 by 900 of the Asus Zenbook UX31-RSL8 ($1,049 list, 4 stars). Its viewing angles are slightly narrow; once or twice we found ourselves wishing we could tilt the screen back a fraction further. On the positive side, the display's colors are vivid and it's exceptionally bright; Dell advertises 300 nits but we would have guessed more?you can turn the backlight fully halfway down, not just a notch or two, without things getting dingy.

The eye-pleasing screen is matched by a finger-friendly keyboard, with slightly scalloped keys and a precise, slightly clicky design that avoids the too-shallow typing feel of some ultrabooks. The keyboard lacks dedicated Home, End, PgUp, and PgDn keys (they're doubled up on the cursor arrows) and the seldom used context-menu key, but provides a bright LED backlight for typing in dim environments. The large touchpad works smoothly; its lower left and right corners serve as nicely tactile mouse buttons.

Features
The Dell XPS 13 hits the wireless trifecta with 802.11n Wi-Fi (which worked perfectly in our tests), Bluetooth, and Intel's Wireless Display (WiDi) for zapping video and audio to an HDTV set equipped with a Belkin ScreenCast or Netgear Push2TV adapter. Speaking of audio, the ultrabook's is surprisingly clear and crisp.

From being lavish with features, however, the XPS 13 abruptly becomes a minimalist when it comes to input/output ports: There's a USB 2.0 port and headset jack on the laptop's left side, and a USB 3.0 port and Mini DisplayPort alongside a handy pushbutton-and-LED battery gauge on the right. You'll look in vain for VGA or HDMI video; for an Ethernet port for connecting to wired office networks; or for a memory-card slot, as tempting as it would be to slip the Dell into your digital camera bag.

By contrast, the ultrabook I/O champ, the Toshiba Portege Z830-S8302 ($1,429 list, 3.5 stars), makes room for all four of the above?VGA, HDMI, Ethernet, and a card reader?in a 2.5-pound chassis, and most competitors manage at least an HDMI port. Dell sells a USB Ethernet adapter for $30 and Mini DisplayPort to HDMI and VGA adapters for $30 and $37, respectively, so it's not the end of the world, but it's a gripe if you dislike dongles.

After subtracting a system-recovery partition and the software preload, the 128GB SSD has about 75GB free. Happily, there's no bloatware to speak of, unless you count Skype, Microsoft Office Starter 2010, and a McAfee Internet Security trial. Dell boosts the XPS 13's one-year warranty with a year of in-home or -office service after remote diagnostics, accidental damage service, and LoJack for Laptops theft protection.

One of the XPS 13's neatest features is one that Intel has touted as part of its ultrabook "sleep instead of switch off" specification but that we haven't seen in person before: Smart Connect technology, which lets the laptop periodically wake itself from sleep mode (you set the interval from 5 to 60 minutes), as long as it's connected to a trusted Wi-Fi or wired network, to check your Outlook email and calendar, TweetDeck feed, or other active applications so the latest data is waiting for you when you reawaken the ultrabook and return to work. We tried it briefly with Gmail and it worked like a charm?we can see Smart Connect saving minutes every morning.

Performance
Dell XPS 13

As mentioned earlier, the Dell XPS 13 is built around a 1.6GHz Intel Core i5 processor, the "Sandy Bridge" model i5-2467M, and the same Intel HD 3000 integrated graphics used in all ultrabooks to date. The hardware posted first-class overall performance with a score of 3,535 in our PCMark 7 benchmark test, ahead of the HP Folio 13's score of 3,146 (and behind the Asus UX31-RSL8's result of 3,634, but our Asus test unit had a slightly quicker 1.7GHz CPU instead of the 1.6GHz chip used in models on sale today).

Dell XPS 13

The XPS 13 also shone in the 3DMark06 graphics test, though like all ultrabooks it's built for productivity instead of 3D gaming?the system managed only 17 and 15.2 frames per second at medium settings in Crysis and Lost Planet 2, respectively.

Thanks to its SSD, the XPS 13 also boots up and resumes from sleep in a flash?well, a few flashes, since we couldn't equal Dell's claims of 8 and 1 seconds, respectively; booting from cold till the last taskbar icon appeared took about 20 seconds, but waking from sleep took a snappy 2 seconds.

Dell claims almost nine hours of battery life for the XPS 13. Unfortunately, our MobileMark 2007 battery rundown test failed to run. But based on the battery's size (47Wh) and our real-world testing, we estimate about six and a half hours for real-world productivity work. In strenuous or worst-case anecdotal testing, word processing and Web surfing in the foreground while Windows Media Player looped a five-minute, full-screen video in the background, the XPS 13 lasted 3 hours 40 minutes. We'll update this review after we get MobileMark to run, but the XPS 13's battery life seems in line with other ultrabooks.

Update 3/2/12: Our estimate was fairly close?MobileMark 2007 reported a runtime of 5 hours 58 minutes. That's in the ballpark with the Asus UX31-RSL8 and MacBook Air 13-inch, though it trails the 7:33 of the HP Folio 13.

There will be a flood of new ultrabooks coming with the arrival of Intel's "Ivy Bridge" processor update this year, but Dell has set the bar very high without needing new silicon. If it had just one or two of the missing ports we groused about?say HDMI and a card reader?the Dell XPS 13 would be spectacular; as is, if you don't mind carrying a dongle or two, it's an ultra-small, ultra-sophisticated choice that shoots to the top of ultrabook shopping lists.

The History of Intialism(s)
LGBT (or GLBT) is an initialism used since the 1990s as a self-designation by what was formerly known as the "gay community". It refers collectively to "lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender" people. In use since the 1990s, the term "LGBT" is an adaptation of the initialism "LGB", which itself started replacing the phrase "gay community" beginning in the mid-to-late 1980s, which many within the community in question felt did not accurately represent all those to whom it referred.

The term LGBT is intended to emphasize a diversity of "sexuality and gender identity-based cultures" and is sometimes used to refer to anyone who is non-heterosexual instead of exclusively to people who are homosexual, bisexual, or transgender. To recognize this inclusion, a popular variant adds the letter Q for those who identify as queer and are questioning their sexual identity (e.g., "LGBTQ" or "GLBTQ", recorded since 1996).

Before the sexual revolution of the 1960s, there was no common non-derogatory vocabulary for non-heterosexuality; the closest such term, "third gender", traces back to the 1860s but never gained wide acceptance.

The first widely used term, homosexual, was thought to carry negative connotations and tended to be replaced by homophile in the 1950s and 1960s, and subsequently gay in the 1970s. As lesbians forged more public identities, the phrase "gay and lesbian" became more common. | Source

The initialisms are not agreeable to everyone that they literally encompass. On the one hand, some intersex people who want to be included in LGBT groups suggest an extended initialism "LGBTI" (recorded since 1999). This initialism "LGBTI" is used all parts of "The Activist's Guide of the Yogyakarta Principles in Action. On the other hand, some individuals of one group may feel no relation to the individuals in other groups denoted and find such persistent comparisons offensive. Some argue that transgender and transsexual causes are not the same as that of "LGB" people. A correlative to these ideas is evident in the belief of "lesbian & gay separatism", which holds that lesbians and gay men should form a community distinct and separate from other groups normally included. Other people also do not care for the term as they feel the lettering comes across as being too politically correct, an attempt to categorize various groups of people into one gray area, and that it implies that the issues and priorities of the main groups represented are given equal consideration.

Many variants exist including variations that merely change the order of the letters; LGBT or GLBT are the most common terms and the ones most frequently seen in current usage. Although identical in meaning, "LGBT" may have a more feminist connotation than "GLBT" as it places the "L" (for "lesbian") first.[26] When not inclusive of transgender people it is sometimes shortened to LGB. LGBT or GLBT may also include additional "Q"s for "queer" or "questioning" (sometimes abbreviated with a question mark and sometimes used to mean anybody not literally L, G, B or T) which can then look like e.g., "LGBTQ", "LGBTQQ", or "GLBTQ?".

Other variants may add a "U" for "unsure"; a "C" for "curious"; an "I" for "intersex"; another "T" for "transsexual" or "transvestite"; another "T", "TS", or "2" for "Two?Spirit" persons; an "A" or "SA" for "straight allies"; or an "A" for "asexual". Some may also add a "P" for "pansexual" or "polyamorous", an "H" for "HIV-affected", and/or an "O" for "other".

The order of the letters has not been standardized; in addition to the variations between the positions of the initial "L" or "G", the mentioned, less?common letters, if used, may appear in almost any order. Variant terms do not typically represent political differences within the community, but arise simply from the preferences of individuals and groups. The terms pansexual, omnisexual, fluid and queer-identified are regarded as falling under the umbrella term "bisexual". Likewise, the terms transsexual and intersex are regarded by some people as falling under the umbrella term "transgender" though many transsexual and intersex people object to this (both for different reasons).

"SGL" (i.e. "same gender loving") is sometimes favored among African Americans as a way of distinguishing themselves from what they regard as white?dominated LGBT communities. "MSM" (er.g. "men who have sex with men") is clinically used to describe men who have sex with other men without referring to their sexual orientation.

A phrase introduced in the 2000s, "minority sexual and gender identities" ("MSGI"), used to include all letters and acronyms, has yet to find its way into common usage. The magazine Anything That Moves coined the acronym FABGLITTER (from Fetish such as the BDSM lifestyle community, Allies or poly-Amorous as in Polyamorous couples became more used, Bisexual, Gay, Lesbian, Intersexed, Transgender, Transsexual Engendering Revolution or inter-Racial attraction), although this term has not made its way into common usage.

Another acronym that has begun to spread is QUILTBAG, from Queer/Questioning, Undecided, Intersex, Lesbian, Trans, Bisexual, Asexual, Gay. Again, this is not a common term. Similarly, in some areas people are starting to simply use 'LGBTetc' or 'LGBTQetc' to include everyone.

The initial A for Allies came from some of the paraphilia or sexual fetishism lifestyles, who are primarily in support of the GLBT community, and sometimes they form an alliance in sociopolitical affairs to further represent the umbrella term GLBTA (Gay Lesbian Bi Trans Alternative or Allies). | Source

Homosexuality

Homosexuality is romantic or sexual attraction or behavior between members of the same sex or gender. As a sexual orientation, homosexuality refers to "an enduring pattern of or disposition to experience sexual, affectional, or romantic attractions" primarily or exclusively to people of the same sex; "it also refers to an individual's sense of personal and social identity based on those attractions, behaviors expressing them, and membership in a community of others who share them."

The most common terms for homosexual people are lesbian for women and gay for men, though gay is also used to refer generally to homosexual men and women. The number of people who identify as gay or lesbian?and the proportion of people who have same-sex sexual experiences?are difficult for researchers to estimate reliably for a variety of reasons. In the modern West, according to major studies, 2% to 13% of the population is homosexual or has had some form of same-sex sexual contact within his or her lifetime. In a 2006 study 20% of respondents anonymously reported some homosexual feelings, although fewer participants identified themselves as homosexual. Homosexual behavior is also widely observed in animals.

Publicly gay politicians have attained numerous government posts, even in countries that had sodomy laws in their recent past. Examples include Guido Westerwelle, Germany's Vice-Chancellor; Peter Mandelson, a British Labour Party cabinet minister and Per-Kristian Foss, formerly Norwegian Minister of Finance.

LGBT movements are opposed by a variety of individuals and organizations. Some social conservatives believe that all sexual relationships with people other than an opposite-sex spouse undermine the traditional family and that children should be reared in homes with both a father and a mother. There is concern that gay rights may conflict with individuals' freedom of speech, religious freedoms in the workplace, the ability to run churches,[180] charitable organizations and other religious organizations in accordance with one's religious views, and that the acceptance of homosexual relationships by religious organizations might be forced through threatening to remove the tax-exempt status of churches whose views do not align with those of the government.

In many cultures, homosexual people are frequently subject to prejudice and discrimination. A 2011 Dutch study concluded that 49% of Holland's youth and 58% of youth foreign to the country reject homosexuality. Similar to other minority groups they can also be subject to stereotyping. These attitudes tend to be due to forms of homophobia and heterosexism (negative attitudes, bias, and discrimination in favor of opposite-sex sexuality and relationships). Heterosexism can include the presumption that everyone is heterosexual or that opposite-sex attractions and relationships are the norm and therefore superior. Homophobia is a fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexual people. It manifests in different forms, and a number of different types have been postulated, among which are internalized homophobia, social homophobia, emotional homophobia, rationalized homophobia, and others. Similar is lesbophobia (specifically targeting lesbians) and biphobia (against bisexual people). When such attitudes manifest as crimes they are often called hate crimes and gay bashing.

Negative stereotypes characterize LGB people as less romantically stable, more promiscuous and more likely to abuse children, but there is no scientific basis to such assertions. Gay men and lesbians form stable, committed relationships that are equivalent to heterosexual relationships in essential respects. Sexual orientation does not affect the likelihood that people will abuse children. Claims that there is scientific evidence to support an association between being gay and being a pedophile are based on misuses of those terms and misrepresentation of the actual evidence. | Source

Queer

If you look up ?queer? on Dictionary.com the first definition reads: ?strange or odd from a conventional viewpoint; unusually different.? The queer I?m talking about is a little bit different, though. It is linked to the LGBT community, but is also separate. New York University senior and Social and Cultural Analysis major Emma said, ?Queer functions as a sort of other. I?m not positive what this other is, but mostly I believe it exists outside of the heteronormative...and the homonormative narratives that society thrusts upon us.?

The acronym LGBT, which stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender, leaves some people feeling invisible, because they don't identify with any of those labels. In these instances, the word queer is absolutely essential. "Whereas I think LGBT is a sexual/gender identity," Emma said, "I believe that queer is sexual/gender with theory, politics, and dance parties added."

But is 'queer' a negative word?
Well, it has been used with negative connotations, and some people still view it that way. The director of New York University's LGBT Student Services, Monroe France, explained that "first and foremost, the word queer still remains a derogatory term for some people." Because it is a word that was co-opted in such a derogatory way for so long, for some people, it remains a slur. If one has memories of the word being used as a put-down to make them feel less-than, it's understandable that one wouldn't want to identify with it. This issue also differs depending on your location, mindset, and social circle. For example, my British aunt was horrified when I mentioned a course I'm taking called Queer Literature. "You can't say that word here," she shushed me, "here" meaning England. Apparently the show Queer Eye for the Straight Guy was taken off all British TV channels because the term is still considered extremely offensive in Britain. The integral point is this: choosing not to identify with the word queer is as valid a choice as choosing to identify with it.

So what's up with 'queer' now?
The word queer now is often used to get rid of limits and limitations. France made a point to say that "Queer is a term that is most often used by activists and academics, and that can make it...not accessible to some people." It is often viewed as a more fluid and all encompassing identifier than many others. I have a close friend who explained to me that she tells most people she identifies as bisexual, because it is a label that is more easily understood, but truthfully, she "feel[s] like queer is a much more holistic way of approaching things, since I am not only attracted to men and women, binary, but also trans-gendered people...it's just that most people don't like hearing that explanation." When it comes to bisexuality, people who identify with the word queer have differing opinions. For someone who has trouble believing in the gender binary (the idea that only two strict genders exist) the idea of bisexuality can feel incongruous. However, identification is an intensely personal decision, and if you feel more comfortable identifying as bisexual than queer, obviously that's completely fine. France pointed out that you can actually identify as bisexual and queer, and that in itself is queer, because the world is constantly asking us to choose just one sexual identity! He also stressed that the word "identity" begins with the letter "I." "It's about you and where you live in the world," he said. "I don't want to take that away from someone." He views his role as an educator as a way to give people the opportunity to learn about their options when it comes to labels. | Source

Undecided

Not so long ago, society dictated that there was one sexual identity and one only. Thankfully, we?ve since progressed to include a wider spectrum of sexual preferences and have a greater understanding and acceptance of gay and bisexual folks. But what if you have no idea where you fit in the spectrum? Or you think you know, but are scared to admit it? You may be convinced you are the only person to have ever felt like this, but you are not the first and you will not be the last. For every person who grows up secure in the knowledge of who they are attracted to, there will be plenty of others who go through a great deal of confusion.

It can be hard to know who to talk to, for fear of judgement or overbearing attitudes. Sometimes those who know us are too closely involved with us to look at us objectively. Therefore it is worth finding some neutral ground ? be it online message boards or chat rooms, phone hotlines or a counselling service. A discreet enquiry at your doctors? surgery is a good place to start if you think speaking to a professional may help you. If you do have friends or relatives you can talk to, great ? just remember that they can only listen and advise; they cannot decide your sexuality for you.

Although it can seem like the biggest deal in your life right now, who you are attracted to and who you sleep with has no bearing on who you are as a person, your education or your career. Even if you feel thoroughly undecided about your sexuality, this should not stop you progressing with the rest of your life. There is no rule that says your sexuality has to be decided on forever more at 18, or 25, or 40.

It is part of human nature to be constantly in flux ? even those lucky enough to find one person and stick with them, will feel the need to ?spice up? or ?rejuvenate? their relationships at some point. If your struggle is more to do with fear of other people?s reactions, remember that you are not obliged to justify your sexual preference to anyone, be they friends, family or colleagues. It is a personal matter for us all ? gay, straight, bi, undecided or undefined. Discover your sexuality at your own pace, and do it for no one else but you. | Source

Intersex
*photos in this section were taken from an episode of Oprah, which you read about in Additional Links.

?Intersex? is a general term used for a variety of conditions in which a person is born with a reproductive or sexual anatomy that doesn?t seem to fit the typical definitions of female or male. For example, a person might be born appearing to be female on the outside, but having mostly male-typical anatomy on the inside. Or a person may be born with genitals that seem to be in-between the usual male and female types?for example, a girl may be born with a noticeably large clitoris, or lacking a vaginal opening, or a boy may be born with a notably small penis, or with a scrotum that is divided so that it has formed more like labia. Or a person may be born with mosaic genetics, so that some of her cells have XX chromosomes and some of them have XY.

Though we speak of intersex as an inborn condition, intersex anatomy doesn?t always show up at birth. Sometimes a person isn?t found to have intersex anatomy until she or he reaches the age of puberty, or finds himself an infertile adult, or dies of old age and is autopsied. Some people live and die with intersex anatomy without anyone (including themselves) ever knowing.

Which variations of sexual anatomy count as intersex? In practice, different people have different answers to that question. That?s not surprising, because intersex isn?t a discreet or natural category.

What does this mean? Intersex is a socially constructed category that reflects real biological variation. To better explain this, we can liken the sex spectrum to the color spectrum. There?s no question that in nature there are different wavelengths that translate into colors most of us see as red, blue, orange, yellow. But the decision to distinguish, say, between orange and red-orange is made only when we need it?like when we?re asking for a particular paint color. Sometimes social necessity leads us to make color distinctions that otherwise would seem incorrect or irrational, as, for instance, when we call certain people ?black? or ?white? when they?re not especially black or white as we would otherwise use the terms.

In the same way, nature presents us with sex anatomy spectrums. Breasts, penises, clitorises, scrotums, labia, gonads?all of these vary in size and shape and morphology. So-called ?sex? chromosomes can vary quite a bit, too. But in human cultures, sex categories get simplified into male, female, and sometimes intersex, in order to simplify social interactions, express what we know and feel, and maintain order.

So nature doesn?t decide where the category of ?male? ends and the category of ?intersex? begins, or where the category of ?intersex? ends and the category of ?female? begins. Humans decide. Humans (today, typically doctors) decide how small a penis has to be, or how unusual a combination of parts has to be, before it counts as intersex. Humans decide whether a person with XXY chromosomes or XY chromosomes and androgen insensitivity will count as intersex.

In our work, we find that doctors? opinions about what should count as ?intersex? vary substantially. Some think you have to have ?ambiguous genitalia? to count as intersex, even if your inside is mostly of one sex and your outside is mostly of another. Some think your brain has to be exposed to an unusual mix of hormones prenatally to count as intersex?so that even if you?re born with atypical genitalia, you?re not intersex unless your brain experienced atypical development. And some think you have to have both ovarian and testicular tissue to count as intersex.

Rather than trying to play a semantic game that never ends, we at ISNA take a pragmatic approach to the question of who counts as intersex. We work to build a world free of shame, secrecy, and unwanted genital surgeries for anyone born with what someone believes to be non-standard sexual anatomy.

By the way, because some forms of intersex signal underlying metabolic concerns, a person who thinks she or he might be intersex should seek a diagnosis and find out if she or he needs professional healthcare. | Source

Lesbian

Gladys Bentley

Lesbian is a term most widely used in the English language to describe sexual and romantic desire between females. The word may be used as a noun, to refer to women who identify themselves or who are characterized by others as having the primary attribute of female homosexuality, or as an adjective, to describe characteristics of an object or activity related to female same-sex desire.

Lesbian as a concept, used to differentiate women with a shared sexual orientation, is a 20th-century construct. Throughout history, women have not had the freedom or independence to pursue homosexual relationships as men have, but neither have they met the harsh punishment in some societies as homosexual men. Instead, lesbian relationships have often been regarded as harmless and incomparable to heterosexual ones unless the participants attempted to assert privileges traditionally enjoyed by men. As a result, little in history has been documented to give an accurate description of how female homosexuality has been expressed. When early sexologists in the late 19th century began to categorize and describe homosexual behavior, hampered by a lack of knowledge about lesbianism or women's sexuality, they distinguished lesbians as women who did not adhere to female gender roles and designated them mentally ill.

Women in homosexual relationships responded to this designation either by hiding their personal lives or accepting the label of outcast and creating a subculture and identity that developed in Europe and the United States. Following World War II, during a period of social repression when governments actively persecuted homosexuals, women developed networks to socialize with and educate each other. Greater economic and social freedom allowed women gradually to be able to determine how they could form relationships and families. With second wave feminism and growth of scholarship in women's history and sexuality in the 20th century, the definition of lesbian broadened, sparking a debate about sexual desire as the major component to define what a lesbian is. Women generally exhibit greater sexual fluidity than men and find it easier to become physically and emotionally intimate with the same sex than men do. Some women who engage in homosexual behavior may reject the lesbian identity entirely, refusing to identify themselves as lesbian or bisexual. Other women may adopt a lesbian identity for political reasons. Greater understanding of women's sexuality has led to three components to identifying lesbians: sexual behavior, sexual desire, or sexual identity.

Portrayals of lesbians in the media suggest that Western society at large has been simultaneously intrigued and threatened by women who challenge feminine gender roles, and fascinated and appalled with women who are romantically involved with other women. Women who adopt a lesbian identity share experiences that form an outlook similar to an ethnic identity: as homosexuals, they are unified by the discrimination and potential rejection they face from their families, friends, and others. As women, they face concerns separate from men. Lesbians may encounter distinct physical or mental health concerns. Political conditions and social attitudes also affect the formation of lesbian relationships and families. Source | The Well of Loneliness

Transgender

Dr. Camille Cabral

Transgender is the state of one's "gender identity" (self-identification as woman, man, neither or both) not matching one's "assigned sex" (identification by others as male, female or intersex based on physical/genetic sex). "Transgender" does not imply any specific form of sexual orientation; transgender people may identify as heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, pansexual, polysexual, or asexual; some may consider conventional sexual orientation labels inadequate or inapplicable to them. | Source

People who identify as transgender or transsexual are usually people who are born with typical male or female anatomies but feel as though they?ve been born into the ?wrong body.? For example, a person who identifies as transgender or transsexual may have typical female anatomy but feel like a male and seek to become male by taking hormones or electing to have sex reassignment surgeries.

Kokumo

People who have intersex conditions have anatomy that is not considered typically male or female. Most people with intersex conditions come to medical attention because doctors or parents notice something unusual about their bodies. In contrast, people who are transgendered have an internal experience of gender identity that is different from most people. | Source

Our culture tends to limit its understanding of gender to only two options: man and woman. LGBT Ministries believes there are more than two genders. We use the word ?transgender? in our office?s title as an umbrella term to describe the following people: crossdressers; people who identify as genderqueer, third gender, gender fluid, and/or two spirit; some intersex individuals; transsexuals; and all self-identified trans people. But even this is not completely accurate.

Sex and Gender: People are assigned a biological sex at birth (e.g., male, female, intersex). People define their own gender (e.g., man, woman, transgender, genderqueer).

Gender Binary: A system of classifying sex and gender into two distinct and disconnected forms, dividing people into masculine and feminine bodies, identities, roles, and attributes. The gender binary is dependent on policing people to make sure they don?t digress from the system in appearance, anatomy, or behavior.

Gender Identity: Gender identity refers to an individual?s sense of being a man, a woman, neither of these, both, and so on?it is one?s inner sense of being and one?s own understanding of how one relates to the gender binary. Everyone has a gender identity.

Gender Expression: Gender expression describes how people manifest feeling masculine or feminine through their appearance, behavior, dress, speech patterns, and more. This term refers to how a person expresses their gender identity or the cues people use to identify gender.

Transgender: The word transgender was first coined as a way of distinguishing gender benders with no desire for surgery or hormones from transsexuals, those who desired to legally and medically change their sex. More recently transgender and/or trans has become an umbrella term that is popularly used to include all people who transgress dominant conceptions of gender, or at least all people who identify themselves as doing so.

Nong Tum

Cisgender: Cisgender, or cis, is a term that is becoming increasingly popular to describe people who are not trans or gender variant?in other words, those whose gender identities, presentations, and behavior ?match? (according to the gender binary) the sex they were assigned at birth. Cis is a prefix with roots that mean ?on the same side?; trans and cis are neutral descriptors analogous to the prefixes homo and hetero.

Cross-Dressing & Drag: Cross-dressing refers to occasionally wearing clothing of the ?opposite? gender, and someone who considers this an integral part of their identity may identify as a crossdresser (note: the term crossdresser is preferable to transvestite and neither may ever be used to describe a transsexual person). Drag queens and drag kings are performers who offer exaggerated, performative presentations of gender and often cross-dress. Cross-dressing and drag are not necessarily tied to erotic activity or sexual orientation.

Genderqueer / Third Gender / Two Spirit: These identity labels are sometimes used by people who feel between and/or outside the gender binary. Individuals may identify as being neither man nor woman, as a little bit of both, as outside the binary, or they may simply feel restricted by gender labels. Two spirit is a term derived from the traditions of some Native North American cultures, and can sometimes mean a mixture of masculine and feminine spirits living in the same body.

Gender Variant / Gender Non-Comforming: General terms for people who bend gender in some way and/or have non-binary gender identities.

Transsexual: The term transsexual has historically been used to refer to individuals who have medically and legally changed their sex, or who wish to do so. Most transsexual people feel a conflict between their gender identity and the sex they were assigned at birth. Other labels used within this group are MtF (male-to-female) and FtM (female-to-male).

Transition: Transition refers to the complex process of authentically living into one?s gender identity, often but not always including leaving behind one?s assigned birth sex. A transition may include coming out to one's family, friends, and/or co-workers; changing one?s name and/or gender markers on legal documents; hormone therapy; and possibly (though not always) some form of surgery. Not all trans people identify with the word transition and it should furthermore never be assumed that a person will ?complete? this process at any particular time. Some people who have transitioned no longer consider themselves to be transsexual or transgender and rather identify only as a man or a woman (occasionally ?of transgender experience?). Others identify as a trans man or a trans woman. | Source

Bisexual

Bisexuality is sexual behavior or an orientation involving physical or romantic attraction to both males and females, especially with regard to men and women. It is one of the three main classifications of sexual orientation, along with a heterosexual and a homosexual orientation, all a part of the heterosexual?homosexual continuum. Pansexuality may or may not be subsumed under bisexuality, with some sources stating that bisexuality encompasses sexual or romantic attraction to all gender identities. People who have a distinct but not exclusive preference for one sex over the other may also identify themselves as bisexual, and people who lack sexual attraction to either sex or genders are known as asexual.

Bisexuality has been observed in various human societies and elsewhere in the animal kingdom throughout recorded history. The term bisexuality, however, like the terms hetero- and homosexuality, was coined in the 19th century.

Like other queer sexualities, bisexuality has been discriminated against. Most of the discrimination has surrounded the application of the word "bisexual" and scrutiny of the bisexual identity as a whole. The belief that bisexuality does not exist is common, and stems from two views. In the heterosexist view, people are presumed to be attracted to the opposite sex and it is sometimes reasoned that only heterosexuality truly exists. In the monosexist view, people are either exclusively homosexual (gay/lesbian), exclusively heterosexual (straight), closeted homosexual people who wish to appear heterosexual, heterosexuals who are experimenting with their sexuality, or cannot be bisexual unless they are equally attracted to both sexes.

The belief that one cannot be bisexual unless equally attracted to both sexes is disputed by various researchers, who have reported bisexuality to fall on a continuum, like sexuality in general. In 2005, the belief that bisexuality must involve equal sexual/romantic attraction was further perpetuated by researchers Gerulf Rieger, Meredith L. Chivers, and J. Michael Bailey, who concluded that bisexuality is extremely rare in men. This was based on results of controversial penile plethysmograph testing when viewing pornographic material involving only men and pornography involving only women. Critics state that this study works from the assumption that a person is only truly bisexual if he or she exhibits virtually equal arousal responses to both opposite-sex and same-sex stimuli, and have consequently dismissed the self-identification of people whose arousal patterns showed even a mild preference for one sex. Some researchers say that the technique used in the study to measure genital arousal is too crude to capture the richness (erotic sensations, affection, admiration) that constitutes sexual attraction. The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force called the study and The New York Times coverage of it flawed and biphobic. FAIR also criticized the study. In 2008, Bailey stated he regretted repeating the notion that people are gay, straight or lying, especially with regard to men. In a new study with the same technology but different recruiting criteria and stimuli, he said he found bisexual genital arousal patterns in men.

In 1995, Harvard Shakespeare professor Marjorie Garber made the academic case for bisexuality with her Vice Versa: Bisexuality and the Eroticism of Everyday Life, in which she argued that most people would be bisexual if not for "repression, religion, repugnance, denial, laziness, shyness, lack of opportunity, premature specialization, a failure of imagination, or a life already full to the brim with erotic experiences, albeit with only one person, or only one gender." | Source

Asexual

On its homepage, Asexuality.org defines an asexual as "a person who does not experience sexual attraction." This is a definition about desire - how you feel, and not about sexual behavior - how you act.

Beyond the dimensions of feelings and behaviors is something broader - an asexual identity. There a process of self-examination involved in identifying as asexual. Importantly, though, an identity is not just personal - it is also social, cultural, and interpersonal. Asexuals who come together on asexuality.org to share experiences are building a community. They have the potential to engage in consciousness-raising and collective action, too. Health and mental health professionals, for instance, may be a little less quick to pathologize asexuality (see below) if there is a defined group of asexuals keeping the opinion leaders on their toes.

When the 102 asexuals in Scherrer's study discussed the meaning of their own asexuality, they most often pointed to desires: They said they did not experience sexual attraction or desire. One of the participants, Jenn, said this:

? "I just don't feel sexual attraction to people. I love the human form and can regard individuals as works of art and find people aesthetically pleasing, but I don't ever want to come into sexual contact with even the most beautiful of people."

Others, though, said they did feel sexual attraction but not the inclination to act on it. Sarah said this to the researcher:

? "I am sexually attracted to men but have no desire or need to engage in sexual or even non-sexual activity (cuddling, hand-holding, etc.)."

Gay

The term was originally used to refer to feelings of being "carefree", "happy", or "bright and showy"; it had also come to acquire some connotations of "immorality" as early as 1637. The term's use as a reference to homosexuality may date as early as the late 19th century, but its use gradually increased in the 20th century. In modern English, gay has come to be used as an adjective, and occasionally as a noun, referring to the people, especially to men, and the practices and cultures associated with homosexuality. By the end of the 20th century, the word gay was recommended by major style guides to describe people attracted to members of the same sex. At about the same time, a new, pejorative use became prevalent in some parts of the world. In the Anglosphere, this connotation, among younger speakers, has a derisive meaning equivalent to rubbish or stupid (as in "That's so gay."). In this use, the word does not mean "homosexual", so it can be used, for example, to refer to an inanimate object or abstract concept of which one disapproves. This usage can also refer to weakness or unmanliness. When used in this way, the extent to which it still retains connotations of homosexuality has been debated and harshly criticized.

The first documented case of, "I know bitch, I was watching".

When used with a derisive attitude (e.g. "that was so gay"), the word gay is pejorative. While retaining its other meanings, it has also acquired "a widespread current usage" amongst young people, as a general term of disparagement. This pejorative usage has its origins in the late 1970s. Beginning in the 1980s and especially in the late 1990s, the usage as a generic insult became common among young people.

By the mid-20th century, gay was well established in reference to hedonistic and uninhibited lifestyles and its antonym straight, which had long had connotations of seriousness, respectability, and conventionality, had now acquired specific connotations of heterosexuality. In the case of gay, other connotations of frivolousness and showiness in dress ("gay apparel") led to association with camp and effeminacy. This association no doubt helped the gradual narrowing in scope of the term towards its current dominant meaning, which was at first confined to subcultures. Gay was the preferred term since other terms, such as queer, were felt to be derogatory. Homosexual is perceived as excessively clinical, since the sexual orientation now commonly referred to as "homosexuality" was at that time a mental illness diagnosis in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM).

In mid-20th century Britain, where male homosexuality was illegal until the Sexual Offences Act 1967, to openly identify someone as homosexual was considered very offensive and an accusation of serious criminal activity. Additionally, none of the words describing any aspect of homosexuality were considered suitable for polite society. Consequently, a number of euphemisms were used to hint at suspected homosexuality. Examples include "sporty" girls and "artistic" boys, all with the stress deliberately on the otherwise completely innocent adjective.

The sixties marked the transition in the predominant meaning of the word gay from that of "carefree" to the current "homosexual". By 1963, a new sense of the word gay was known well enough to be used by Albert Ellis in his book The Intelligent Woman's Guide to Man-Hunting. Similarly, Hubert Selby, Jr. in his 1964 novel Last Exit to Brooklyn, could write "[he] took pride in being a homosexual by feeling intellectually and esthetically superior to those (especially women) who weren't gay..." | Source
