Sirius, as the name comes from ancient Greek and means light in this language. This star is located in the constellation Canis Major, the Big Dog is. There are two other dogs constellations, Canis Minor, the little dog, a very bright star Procyon mentioned in it. Procyon means to lead a dog. Finally, we have Venatici sticks, hunting dogs, which has no bright stars, although the three stars visible with the name, Cor Caroli, Chara, and La Superba. There are also four galaxies, whirlpool, sun flowers, Croc?s eyes, and Silver Needle. Please note that all galaxies have names in English. This is because other galaxies are not recognized until after 1923. The name was not to come down from the previous century.
Ursa Major, Big Bear has the most stars are named, 22, also named four galaxy. The majority of the star players, but also through the air from the Arabic. Dubhe, for example, is simply the Arabic word for bear (probably not an Arabic word that useful to know if it is to be found in Cairo). Megrez: the base of the tail. This is typical of the star names that can describe the position of the stars or in the constellation.
Of course there are some oddities, like a star whose name means hyena in Draco the dragon, or a monkey in the pigeon Columba. These names are the remains of the ancient constellations that have been deleted or ignored.
Some of the names for the problems in different ways. Libra has appointed five stars: Zubeneschamali, Zubenelgenubi, Zubenelgubi, and Zubenhakrabi Mulizi. Zuben jaw means in Arabic, and all the names mean north, south, or simply ?the cancer.? Mulizi sneak in Akkadian from 3,000 years ago, and means ?man of fire.? (I rattle the names of all my classes are used, and then said they would do in the next test, ?Spelling is important.? Actually, to see who is awake.)
More than a dozen stars to the astronomer who discovered it and named some research on them. Leading Dutch astronomer Jacobus Kapteyn (1851-1922) has named a star in the southern constellation Pictor, a crater on the moon and an asteroid after him, an impressive trifecta sky.
There are 88 constellations now recognized by the astronomical community, based on recommendations about 130 years ago by Benjamin S. Gould, the first American Ph.D. in astronomy (he got it at the University of Heidelberg in Germany, where they to a degree through the centuries are determined). Gould chose 48 and 40 ancient constellations, which are usually found 1500-1800 in order to fill gaps in the ancient world. 81 of the constellations have one or more stars with a name that more attractive than a Greek letter or catalog number. Most of the seven without modern name stars, fainter, southern constellations like Antlia and Circinus.
Around 1600 a German cartographer, Johannes Bayer, so that maps of the sky, and no reason is, by the Greek letter attached to many of the known stars. The idea is popular, and so we have names such as Alpha Centauri. The first Astronomer Royal, John Flamsteed had a different idea, and began in 1690, practicing in the constellation of stars numbering each, going from west to east. So Sirius Alpha Canis Majoris, and also 8 Canis Majoris (none of this is a very popular alternative). Then, the catalog will have more opportunities to be a star, and the result to indicate that the average star has a nickname as much as the average bank robber worked hard.
Note that no mention of the name purchased. This was completely ignored by the astronomical profession and is the source of the noise from the planetarium show and have a star that they buy they think. (If you buy the Brookyn Bridge, it will be just like the middle.) In my years of training students to work in the planetarium, one of the things that I should ask to learn how people deal with negative reactions have they lost their money, especially parents, relatives, awaken to create a lasting memory of the deceased child hope.
